The Free Patriot ^ | 5/9/13 | Matt Liponoga

Posted on 05/09/2013 7:14:18 PM PDT by NewJerseyJoe

The revolutionary concept of 3-D printed firearms has been building momentum for months now. Online observers, innovators, investors and the generally curious celebrated as the first completely 3-D printed handgun became a reality. Since the blueprint for “The Liberator” hit the web, the file was downloaded thousands of times in just a few days.

Today, the government shut it down.

Cody Wilson, the 3-D gunsmith, law student, and founder of the non-profit innovation outlet, Defense Distributed, broke the bad news in a tweet to his followers.

Kabuki Theater. They cannot stop it. Cat’s out of the bag, and all the government can do is pretend that they are making an effort.

I learned to make a gun when I was about 6 years old from watching my uncle do it while playing with fireworks.

Unbelievably clueless they are. The entire manufacturing world is about to be transformed by 3D printing, and they act as if they can squelch it by stomping out one little fire. Any clever high school student could design and print a gun.

” They cannot stop it.”

Unless you already have a 3D printer, they can restrict you from getting one, and can require you to be inspected so you don’t make illegal things if they allow you to apply for a permit to get one.

Soon, Congress might be debating as to whether potential 3D printer buyers need permits like explosives permits. Might see some skyrocketing prices on those things, too.

They might be able to hinder geting the printed plastic guns but they’re several hundred years too late to stop people from making them the old fashioned way.

In fact, with modern material and a little common sense, home made guns are probably safer than the expert manufactured guns of the early days.

Price increases on 3D printers would be the free market at work, though, especially if enterprising entrepreneurs buy enough of those 3D printers quickly enough to sell them at a premium soon. Maybe buyers could get those from such resellers, even without a universal background check on them, if they really hurry and do it now!

You can build your own. That's been open source for several years now. See RepRap.
