Detroit has a long history of making stuff — cars, steel, even popcorn.

Now, the city is home to a manufacturing facility devoted to the production of an item not made at this scale in the U.S. for decades: Wristwatches.

A Dallas-based company has set up a production line for its Shinola brand of watches in Detroit.

Shinola officials say their watch production target for this year is 45,000, to be sold online, at flagship stores in Detroit and New York and at fashion and jewelry retailers and department stores around the country.

Private money is really stepping up and conservatives could retake and rebuild the city for the greatest coup since abolition.

Contrary to popular belief, Detroit is not a liberal city. Its a city with lots of corruption. We’re not seeing a drive for gay marriage, gun control, or green energy coming out of Detroit.

Working in close proximity to a university, I can tell you that kids do still wear watches...just cheap digital ones or “costume jewelry” type watches.

They need to make that 14” model that the little dorks wear around their necks.

I have nothing against cheap watches — I buy mine at Walmart.

The kids in SoCal, however, prefer to look at their phones if they want to know what time it is.

Things may be different in parts of the country where civilization has yet to collapse.

“Really smart investors looking down the road a ways could do a lot worse than Detroit, especially around the river and downtown.”

Wise investors might wish to add in the costs of high grade fencing, concertina wire, lighting systems, machine gun towers, rising ammo costs, etc.

Don’t forget the expenses of tail gunners on all company vehicles.

PS What about the increased insurance bills because of arson and degraded fire departments?

My nephew is staying with me while he earns money to get an apartment. I encourage him to wear a watch due to the fact that when he applies for a job or talks to a potential landlord, they’ll see it as a sign that he’s interested in being on time and is responsible.

Large flat screen TVs are also being assembled in Detroit now too. The components come from china still but the Minnesota company hopes to start manufacturing components around the midwest.

Really? That would be great!

You wouldn't happen to know which company do you cripple?

Also, I wear a watch and heard the shinola expression and I am probably the second youngest person on this website.

So, I don't know what some of you are talking about.

I always wondered how the Shinola people felt about that one (the expression) . . . “Hi! I’m the new man from Shinola!” “Hi, how are ya, nice to see ya.”

— George Carlin, Filthy Words (from Occupation: Foole)
And in the same routine, there was something about another expression about not knowing whether to $#!+ or wind your watch . . . Shinola Watches seems to combine the two, perhaps?

I’m not sure of the brand name but the company is Element Electronics. Apparently these are the only TVs being manufactured in the USA.

Probably no one under 40 has ever heard that expression.

Steve Martin explained the difference quite well in the movie "The Jerk."

My 30somethings have, they grew up on critical thinking stuff like that and “wish in one hand, poop in the other, then see which fills up faster”. What’s funny is to hear them tell their kids the same.

slightly off, this is an american company that makes expensive american watches.

you’re right about shoe polishes... since
“Shinola/Detroit LLC purchased the Shinola name from the defunct shoe polish company, and is now an American manufacturer of watches, bicycles, leather goods, and journals in Detroit.”

I went to the internet to try to find out when the last can of Shinola was made. Can’t find it.
