A heroic teacher who shielded her students from Oklahoma’s monster tornado is recovering in the hospital after the metal leg of a desk speared her in the calf.

Suzanne Haley says she’s grateful to be alive, and that the incredible injury she sustained isn’t life-threatening.

“It didn’t hit the bone. It just went through the muscle,” she told Fox affiliate KOKH-TV from her hospital bed Tuesday.

Haley, a paraprofessional at Briarwood Elementary School in suburban Oklahoma City, said she and another teacher immediately rushed the children under desks and into the corner of the classroom as the twister bore down Monday.

It was the last day of school, and the dozen students in her first-grade special education class were eager to start their summer vacations. Also inside the classroom were Haley’s two young daughters.

Impalement by flying objects is a huge risk during tornadoes. The winds are so powerful that there have been cases of a stalk of straw driven through a telephone pole.

One grotesque photo from this tornado shows a dead horse, impaled by a large “piece of metal”.

Ahead of the MSM news curve, I see...

To the OP: this lady is admirable! I am glad to see it is a relatively minor wound (but *OUCH*).

Saw her on the news last night. Sheltered her students with her body while praying at they top of her lungs that
“these kids are not dying today!!”

I'm sure the NEA and local atheists will have something to say about both acts.

Me? She a hero! On both selfless acts

One teacher being interviewed said she hovered over several kids in a restroom stall ... and she prayed out loud.

[IIRC, that was on NBC Nightly News.]

She and the kids with her survived with only minor scrapes and scratches.

Admirable lady!

However, I must ask ... what is a teaching paraprofessional?

... a paraprofessional at Briarwood Elementary School ...

‘One teacher being interviewed said she hovered over several kids in a restroom stall ... and she prayed out loud.’

She’ll soon be audited by the IRS for praying in a school.
