You might get one even if you don’t, as the ration of takers overcomes the makers.

If US standards are tough then God help us. The Germans make it sou d like there is a choice. The Welfare State model is collapsing. There is no keeping it.

As the United States has been rushing off to adopt the European Model for the past 20 years (and some of our Supremes defer to European Court rulings).
Sure, follow a doomed model and end up just like them. The only ones who 'win' are the ruling class - the rest of the people become serfs to feed their betters.

Imposed socialism doesn't work - it never has, and never will.

The only 'Socialism' that worked for a short while was when the early Christians in Acts voluntarily pooled their goods together (Acts 2:44-45 And all that believed were together, and had all things common; And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.). Of course their 'government' was led by Christ and the Holy Spirit... We and Europe, on the other hand, are led by followers of Satan.

The two classes of people that benefit most from welfare are the rich and poor.

End all forms of welfare now.

If U.S. welfare standards were introduced in Europe, "we would have revolution, not tomorrow, but on the very same day," Schaeuble told a conference in Paris.

Wow. I knew U.S. standards were pretty liberal, but that seems a little over the top. ;-)

It is the grim end to a decades-long social experiment. How do you wean a dependent class your policies deliberately created? Especially when you don't really have a choice? You can't "provide" jobs unless it's day labor on civic construction projects - the Emperors of the late Western Roman Empire managed to buy a lot of time doing that, but they had the legions to back them up. You can't just cut them off. Cutting the benefits down only serves to lengthen the anger and intensify the inevitable rupture.

There's really only one thing for a Ruling Class to do in this situation: steal everything it can and build a safe haven somewhere out of the free-fire zone. And hope that no one comes a-knocking. I understand that there are some very fine dachas available near the Black Sea. Perhaps the Russians might provide them, and security too...for a price. Think of it as a business opportunity.

His error is in assuming that it would just happen one day. The truth is that such reform must be gradual.

Since small business combined is the largest employer in most nations, such a move should be initiated with a serious reduction in the bureaucratic and tax obstacles to entrepreneurship.

Europe needs to discard the mindset of “That which is not expressly permitted in the law is forbidden”, and adopt a much more business friendly, Common Law attitude of “That which is not expressly *forbidden* in the law is legal.”

This simple concept could double the German GDP in a decade, and slash employment to five percent or less.

When welfare is slashed by *attrition*, there are far fewer complaints except among those who profit from managing a welfare state.

Are they that ignorant?

For the record: Europe does not have a capitalist economy. The Treaty of Lisbon officially declares the EU has “social market economy”, or soft fascism.

“We have to rescue an entire generation of young people who are scared.”

You have to rescue an entire generation of young people who think that the State owes them a living.
