Based on some of the reports from the OKC tv reporters last evening, people were told to get underground or get out of the way — meaning leave the presumed path. Thus, many got in their vehicles in an attempt to flee, but the interstates and other major highways experienced major traffic jambs — so people were caught on the roadways with the only protection being their vehicles.

You hit on one of the biggest problems. Getting in a car and trying to drive to safety all too often proves to be fatal.

Those same people often live in apartments or houses that have no underground tornado protection. Bad idea, poor planning.
