Government could use metadata to map your every move
McClatchy Washington Bureau ^ | June 20, 2013 | Lindsay Wise and Jonathan S. Landay

WASHINGTON — If you tweet a picture from your living room using your smartphone, you’re sharing far more than your new hairdo or the color of the wallpaper. You’re potentially revealing the exact coordinates of your house to anyone on the Internet. The GPS location information embedded in a digital photo is an example of so-called metadata, a once-obscure technical term that’s become one of Washington’s hottest new buzzwords. The word first sprang from the lips of pundits and politicians earlier this month, after reports disclosed that the government has been secretly accessing the telephone metadata of Verizon customers, as well as online videos, emails, photos and other data collected by nine Internet companies. President Barack Obama hastened to reassure Americans that “nobody is listening to your phone calls,” while other government officials likened the collection of metadata to reading information on the outside of an envelope, which doesn’t require a warrant. But privacy experts warn that to those who know how to mine it, metadata discloses much more about us and our daily lives than the content of our communications

I don’t own a smartphone. Seems that’s been a pretty smart move not to buy one.

neither do I all my former coworkers use to tell me I’m lagging behind because one day I brought a cassette tape to hear music not an IPOD. Sorry I don’t have money to be spending foolishly, espeically now that I’m unemployed.

Anyway if the government wants a pic of us I suggest we take a pic of ourselves in the restroom and say CHEESE =)

I hope all Facebook users and Twitterers realize now why some of us have been telling them they have been acting like idiots.

Thank God! Can I now retrace and find my lost weapons/gold/truck keys/children/wives cache? Always found my dogs and horses. Where do I sign up? Am I already? Got the info? Thanks.

The Horseshit that “ it’s just metadata, not wiretapping” is terrifying.
They can use that to say, trace every phone call and email to or from an organization or “ person of interest”. And of course the Feds would NEVER abuse that ability right?

It's not just SmartPhones. Any cellphone can be tracked.

I'd suggest, if you must have a cellphone, keep it stored here when you're not using it. Think of it as a fancy skin.

don’t need anything fancy. Put a wireless device inside a shielded metal container and it won’t be able to receive or transmit radio signals. No slots or openings. A tinfoil hat won’t work but a tinfoil envelope will.

Clue ~ your phone company has been able to do that for decades.

Do you know who you voted for to be in charge of the phone company?

Recalling something ~ wasn't a lot of this covered in the Austin Powers movie series? Then there was that bizarre movie I just can't recall where it's revealed at the end that AT&T has been behind the evil all along!

At the time we all thought of that as just fiction ~ but now that even NSA has to go to the phone company for the real skivvy, who knows?
