McCain: We’re now set to have the most militarized border since the Berlin Wall

Via the Corner, he’s a little cranky today.

McCain goes after Neb Sen Deb Fischer on border security: "She's so ill-informed…I don't know where to begin."

— Todd Zwillich (@toddzwillich) June 25, 2013

I’m not sure what she said to warrant that but I’ll update when I do. Maybe she said we should “build the danged fence”? You know how much McCain hates that.

This “Berlin Wall” talking point is a clever one for two reasons. One: It signals to amnesty shills that McCain and the Gang of Eight are still on their side, even though they’ve grudgingly agreed to extra border security to please wary conservatives in the House. By choosing this point of reference, he’s presenting the Corker/Hoeven border measures as something essentially sinister; he goes so far as to say that their amendment is “well over sufficient” in terms of how it’ll improve security, which is odd given that CBO estimated the original Gang of Eight bill would reduce illegal immigration by only 25 percent over the next decade. If he was desperate for a reference point he could have chosen Israel’s security fence instead, which is also an imperfect analogy but not as imperfect as maybe he’d like to think. Bottom line: The bill now contains all the improvements a border hawk could ever dream of and more, so how about shutting up and passing the bill through the House?

Two: He’s inadvertently revealing one of the core problems with Corker/Hoeven here. The reason Democrats preferred that amendment to Cornyn’s (also imperfect) amendment is that Cornyn demanded specific quantifiable results in border improvement. Corker/Hoeven doesn’t demand results, it demands greater resources for the problem, most conspicuously in hiring thousands more Border Patrol agents. Ask any border hawk whether they’d rather have a “militarized” border that still allows one or two million illegals through each year or some demilitarized means that keeps all but a few thousand out and they’ll choose the latter every time. If you’d rather throw resources at a problem than demand a solution by whatever means, then you probably also think the “solution” to a new terrorist attack is to hire more TSA agents and stick them at airport checkpoints. That might help at the margins, but it’s in no real sense a carefully thought through response. It’s a political solution insofar as it shows the public that the feds are willing to Do Something, even if what they’re doing won’t end up finally fixing what’s broken. Same here: Democrats categorically refuse to accept hard numerical targets that would make stages of legalization dependent upon actual results at the border, but they’ll happily throw more agents and drones at it if that’ll buy them Republican votes. That’s what McCain’s selling here. We’ll have a militarized border now, even if that doesn’t considerably slow the flow of illegals. What more do you wingnuts want?

Exit flashback quotation: “I am confident that Deb Fischer will reach across the aisle, because if we are in the majority, we will be able to change things.”

Then these lying B*stards wonder why we hate them. He looks people straight in the eye and lies. I think it is the very nature of a politician to lie. They even lie to themselves when shaving in the morning. I believe it is impossible for a politician to discriminate in what is left of his mind between a lie and the truth on any given issue.

The Berlin Wall was built to keep people IN.
Our wall should be built to keep people OUT.

We cannot absorb millions of Hispanics.,

Especially Hispanics who have no wish to become citizens. to learn our language ,or to help America grow strong.

McCain wasn’t at the bottom of his Annapolis class for no reason.
The man is not smart.

I can't help laughing at this amnesty bill mess.

1. Felony: You want to put some teeth into such a bill, then you must insert a passage that states that it will now be a felony if a person crosses the border illegally in the future once this bill becomes law.

2. Oh, but you can't make it a felony and insult all those illegal immigrants who will be trying to sneak into the United States AFTER the bill is signed.

Really, does anybody believe that those long lines that we now see at the border will suddenly and miracleously disappear once this bill is passed.

3. The bill is so one-sided favoring the illegal immigrant it makes me want to vomit.

4. So make it a felony to cross the border illegally and then the bill will have some teeth.

5. Laugable that pro-immigration bill advertisement I hear on the radio.

6. Must learn to speak English: Will they have to learn how to write it, too?

7. If they don't learn English, there is no time period, will they be thrown out of the country? Give me a break.

8. Go to the back of the line: What line is that? The Department of Motor Vehicles line? The Employment line? Give me break.

9. What pro-bill persons don't tell you: The illegal immigrants will have children who automatically become citizens and go to the front of the line and take their parents with them.

10. Yes, it is on the back of their American-born children that illegals will suddenly go to the front of the line, and receive just about all the rights and benefits of citizens.

11. With their new American-born children with them, there is now no way that these 10 to 50 million illegals will ever be forced to leave.

12. 13 years of waiting list for citizenship: We all know that a few years down the road there will be an outcry to reduce that number to less years in the name of humanitarian considerations for these hard-working new immigrants who have been in the United States now for several years.

13. What a joke.

” McCain wasn’t at the bottom of his Annapolis class for no reason.”

Without family connections, he would have flunked out. Today, he is still a flunky.

Same wine, different bottle: They tried the same dog-and-pony show/enforcement end run by promising ‘state-of-the-art Radio Shack sensors, more BP (ordered to stand down) and more false promises in ‘06—and we told them to go pound sand.
They don’t have any intentions of preventing a tsunami of new “undocumented immigrants” from invading us like a horde of hungry locusts. Who will mow their lawns, cook their meals, make their beds?

There. I’m so flibbergibbeted I’m mixing metaphors like crazy.

The big difference he conveniently forgets is that the Berlin wall was a prison wall to keep people in while the border wall is to slow the invasion of illiterate, socialist leaning illegal aliens.

Some of those pro-bill people make me laugh when they argue how wonderful this bill will be for America.

Sen. Graham, South Carolina: He wants to reach out to Hispanics for the Republican Party, and he wants to do so by helping 10 to 50 illegal immigrants gain rights and citizenship.

1. I didn't know that ALL the illegal immigrants came from Spanish-speaking countries.

2. If Sen. Graham wants to help just Hispanic illegal immigrants so much, why not limit the bill to Hispanic illegal immigrants?

3. Surely, there won't be a problem telling the difference between illegal immigrants, say, from Asia and those from Spanish-speaking countries.

4. To help Sen. Graham's with his wish to help illegal Hispanics, let's limit the bill to illegal immigrants from Spanish-speaking countries only.

5. Sen. Graham doesn't seem to be concerned with illegal immigrants from places like China, Korea, Pakistan, and India, so to save our government a lot of money and to to make the pool of illegal immigrants more manageable, let's limit the amnesty bill to just Spanish-speaking illegal immigrants.

6. Va. Senator speaking Spanish in the Senate to show he favors the bill: That was so embarrassing. What would have happened if he got up and spoke Chinese or Korean? I can't wait.

7. Is that what we have to look forward to: Senators and Congressmen getting up and talking in Spanish in the government chambers because they will be scared that they won't be re-elected if they don't get up and speak Spanish? What a mess this amnesty bill.

John McCain needs to be put in a padded cell somewhere along with Goober Graham and the other “Gang of Eight” where they can do no more damage to this country. Barack Obama needs his own special solitude.

Nah... his problem his he doesn't think. Winston Churchill drank, and he was a great thinker and a lot more fun to be around.

"McLame" seems oblivious to an obvious fact! The Berlin Wall was built TO KEEP PEOPLE IN WHO WERE ENSLAVED!

The U.S. Border Security is being enhanced TO KEEP PEOPLE OUT WHO CHOOSE TO VIOLATE OUR LAWS!!!

The Berlin wall was built by a government to imprison it’s own citizens. The Southern border fence is there to maintain American sovereignty and good relations with Mexico.

You’d think Senator McCain would know some history. Then again, he wasn’t much of a serious student at Annapolis, finishing, IIRC, among the bottom 8 in his class.
