My youngest will be a HS Junior this fall (how did they happen so fast?) and I have packed lunches for him (and his 4 older siblings) ALL thru their school years. What I packed was NEVER a problem til the last school year. A “healthy eating” memo was sent home to all non-lunch ticket participants (along w/a second copy of the “reduced/free lunch” small town telephone book size application. The guidelines, (suggestions) no soda; no salty snacks; avoid processed meats yada yada. I did NOT follow their guidance a s still pack what he wants (large hoagie size sandwich; a bag of chips; grapes or a banana; something by Little Debbie and a Dr. Pepper or Mt. Dew). Since they took the pop machines out of the cafeteria. my son said he has been offered cash for his beverage. I’m waiting for an edict that he CAN’T bring non approved items to eat.

I have two school year left...

no one bought what they were offering, geez, what is so hard about that?

They spent 300K producing a product for sale, few takers, see? So they lost money on the deal, Now do you get it?

RE :”anyone that pulls that “you will eat this and I will keep serving it until it is gone” game is sadistic”

My grandmother grew up on a farm a kid during WWI very poor (typical in those days) and she told me stories about how they could only afford enough meat for her father because he supported the family, and they got bread dipped in the meat grease instead to keep from going hungry.
and her mom would save their meal for evening so they could sleep.

I always remember her scraping every last bit of food out of a jar or can or a plate, to her throwing away food was a sin.

Today uncle Sam will buy it for them, so why not throw it away?

So, the school district, like all the other districts who should REALLY realize is that this government doesn’t have anyone’s best interests and welfare at heart.

This government is only concerned about power, control and obeyance, period. You know nothing; it knows best.

When eyes are open, thought is reasoned, and their “assistance” is refused, they show you exactly what they are all about - revenge and punishment.

They, this government, are not our friend in any conceivable way.

Absolutely! I've been known to tell my 9 year-old that he can cook the family dinner if he's not keen on what mom is serving us. I explain that he'll need a protein, a veggie, and a starch. Then he usually digs into what mom's cooked.

Note that we don't serve food that he absolutely doesn't like, but if he just doesn't "feel" like having a green salad before dinner that's too darned bad.

The schools are loony no money on the deal! The taxpayers are losing the money!

1. Even kids who pay full price (not reduced or free) for their lunches are receiving subsidized food. Each meal costs more to produce than it does to sell at “full price.”
2. That money is mandated for lunches; therefore, the $300K could not have been saved and sent on something worthwhile. The students throw away the food and the superintendent has to keep supplying the same ood instead of purchasing new text books.
3. Making my children eat healthy food isn’t sadistic. It’s called being a parent. The district in which I teach recently went through a rape trial that became an international issue. Several of my coworkers are being investigated by the grand jury for their alleged role in that rape and potentially another rape coverup. I’ve seen first hand what happens when parents want to be friends with their kids (buy them alcohol and turn a blind eye to casual sex) because they want their kids to be popular. That war starts at home and part of that battle is mommy fixes what we like to eat, which is also healthy, so eat your food please. If I allow them to dictate their own gastronomical desires to me at their young ages, how will they treat me when they are teenagers?

Absolutely! Neither of my kids, nor my husband, like green beans. I don’t serve them. However, they do enjoy black beans, avocados, salmon, and many other healthy foods. I bake off sweet potatoes pounds at a time and pull them out of the fridge for quick sides or even just a snack. You should see them, almost five and almost two, with hummus. I have to keep them from licking the bowl! This notion of kids food and kids menus are a joke. We’ve always fed them what we eat. Most of it they like but some of it they don’t. It’s no biggie, but they will eat quality food.

No worries. Some folks just take the argument to extremes. I fail to see how it's good for one's child to treat them as if they're a paying customer in a restaurant.

Again, we won't serve him a huge serving of something that he can't stand and demand that he eat it; I agree that that would be cruel since we can afford other types of food.

What I'm talking about is when a child just decides that tonight they're not going to eat "X" when they've eaten it in the past. OK, maybe it's not the precious angel's favorite food, but that's what's for dinner. Certainly won't kill them to go without if they so choose.

My son doesn't care for asparagus, but mom and I like it. So when we have asparagus, mom will microwave a serving of broccoli for him; that's reasonable. I'm not going to force my son to sit and eat something he doesn't like. But if he decides that tonight he's not going to eat broccoli then he can go w/o dessert or second helpings of the other foods. One night of eating light or doing without isn't going to hurt him or stunt his growth.

Ironically that same grandmother lived to be 101 unfortunately for her, and as she grew older and deteriorated physically and mentally she became more and more kid like and while still living alone just ate mostly ice cream and other sweets, until she required 24-7 care by an aid who eventually fed her with a spoon.

Once that happened meals could be a unpleasant battle as real old people are not little kids.

I bet lots of those kids in that school never seen vegetables before, probably mostly eat high fat high salt high sugar processed foods, stuff my parents fed us that I dont eat anymore. Then at school they try something green and its yuck!

Thanks kids!

they are going to hate you

if they don’t have some choices, they will rebel big time

letting them eat what they want is an easy way to give them choices

good luck

you will need it

that taxpayers are forced to pay for this food for them and they just throw it away, because it is free.

Perhaps she [MObama] is training them at a young age to be inmates at Gitmo?

Lol, you’re a hoot! They’re going to hate me because when they ask for sweet potatoes I give them sweet potatoes! I never said that they were denied choices. Just twenty minutes ago I asked them what they wanted for lunch. I presented their choices and they selected. They both opted for homemade ham and bean soup over Cuban black bean soup with rice. It was a difficult choice as they love both. At some point we’ve all hated our parents. My brother went through a quick gangster rap phase. He hated my mom when she snapped his CDs in half, but she did warn him that she would do that if he didn’t make them disappear. He and I were talking about that last Christmas, and he said that he would do the exact same to his kids if needed, even knowing how much he hated mom for her actions at that time. I am not my children’s friend. We will be friends when they are also adults, but right now I have to get them successfully to adulthood. Let them hate me for making thier PB&Js with homemade bread, jam (from wild berries they help me pick), and Smucker’s natural peanut butter (made by thier grandfather who works there). let them hate me for letting them go into the gardening and choose which heirloom tomato they want on thier BLT. I’m cool with that, mainly because they love all of the things that I have mentioned!

". . . if it’s something they don’t like, it goes down the garbage disposal. So there are a lot of complaints they’re going home hungry.”

Old Chinese proverb: "Hunger is the best sauce."

My kids got tired hearing that when they didn't eat supper and tried to raid the fridge. Forty years later, all I have to say is "Hunger . . ." and they all groan.
