State Sen. Chris Smith, D-Fort Lauderdale, said hes disappointed in the jury verdict finding George Zimmerman not guilty in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, an outcome he said sends the wrong message to Florida and its citizens. Smith is the Democratic Party leader in the Florida Senate, which makes him the highest ranking black elected official in Florida government.
I am deeply disappointed in the jurys inability to hold this man accountable for the shooting death of an unarmed teenager, Smith said in a written statement. The fact that a child is dead and an armed man can now walk free without so much as a backward glance sends the wrong message to Florida and its citizens.
Smith said the verdict shows theres a need for the review of the states controversial Stand Your Ground self defense law.
From Smiths statement:
The self defense claims invoked by George Zimmerman in the killing of Trayvon Martin once again highlighted the glaring shortcomings in our self defense laws, said Senator Smith. While Stand Your Ground was originally claimed by Zimmerman, his attorneys ultimately opted to defend their client under Floridas self defense statutes. And those statutes, whether they involve the meaning of certain terms, or the basics of provocation, remain fuzzily defined and broadly drawn, mirroring in many ways the same egregious loopholes found in Stand Your Ground. And, as the Zimmerman trial unfortunately underscored, open to creative interpretation. ....
The legislature has a duty to stem this culture of violence. If someone makes the claim of self defense and the only other witness to the confrontation is dead, there needs to be a higher standard for proving that the use of deadly force was justified, said Smith.

given it wasn’t a syg case, i’d tell ol Chris to shove it.
Yes, we need to make sure to stop smaller weaker people from being able to stop large MMA fighters from murdering them by bashing their head repeatedly on the sidewalk.
Trayvon was armed with his fists, the element of surprise and a violent rage. He wasn’t a child, he was bigger than Zimmerman, stronger than Zimmerman, and he was on top of Zimmerman. Unfortunately for the lefts narrative the jury saw it that way too.
Look away, Bozo!
“I am deeply disappointed in the jurys inability to hold this man accountable for the shooting death of an unarmed teenager,
Sorry Senator, the jury’s role is to hold the state accountable for proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. It is not their role to hold the defendant accountable.
Another stupid Senator. The Zimmerman case had nothing to do with the Florida “Stand Your Ground” law. The defense was based purely on the universal right of self-defense. IIRC, Stand Your Ground laws was never even mentioned in the entire trial.
Travon Martin speaking to Zimmerman as Martin reached for Zimmerman's holstered gun:
Can they get their heads ariound "GET OVER IT!"?
vaudine
In the GZ/TM case, 100% of the factual evidence supported self-defense. What is this clown's proposal... that courts require 200% of the evidence?
There. Fixed it.
When you are on the Plantation....you do what the MASSA says....and the MASSA says they have to “demand the verdict they want.” Don’t want the goodies to stop.
What was the “unarmed teen” doing when he was shoot?
Was he on top of and beating the armed watch member, MMA style as reported by at least one witness? If so wasn't that inviting trouble?
The jury evaluated the facts and the half-assed prosecution by the State in its show trial and came to the only reasonable decision. If you don't like the results change the self defense laws and/or provide remedial legal education to “wanna be thugs” so the don't do things that will get them killed.
Most ‘RATS like this buffoon prefer a “Take The ***whoopin’ Like A Man. You’ve Got ObamaCare Anyway” policy.
They will never be satisfied. Never. Being a “certified victim group” is too profitable and too addictive.
God made man...Colt made them equal.
He’s a Republican. Allegedly.
