In his third cello sonata, Beethoven set the cello free; it’s the first Romantic cello sonata.

There has long been an argument as to whether the two note figurations in the scherzo are a tie with awkward fingering, or a slur where both notes are to be sounded. This video uses the slur, and it works better than the tie. Beethoven ends the movement in a sneaky fashion.

The middle portion has an ostinato B-A-B-A in triple time, and it’s a forerunner of John William’s “Jaws” theme, except that Williams executed it in duple time.

Beethoven: Sonata for Cello and Piano in A, Op. 69, second movement

Beethoven’s string quartets span most of his life. A quartet headed by first violinist Ignatius Schuppanzigh debuted all of his quartets. When the late quartets came out, second violinist Karl Holz wrote in Beethoven’s conversation book that the guys were having a difficult time understanding these latest works. Beethoven said haughtily, “Oh, I didn’t write them for you! I wrote them for a later generation!” He was right; it wasn’t until after Wagner and during the 20th Century that his late quartets received regular performances.

Instead of the usual four movements, one late quartet consists of seven interconnected movements constituting one long arch of sound. The scherzo is absolutely wild, a music box that runs amok, runs down, and then gets wound up again. The pizzicato notes thrown back and forth are wonderfully funny, and at the end he asks the performers to play on the bridges of their instruments. As a final joke, he even ends it in the wrong key to lead into the next movement.

Beethoven: Quartet in C# minor, Op. 131, scherzo

Beethoven’s violin sonatas also span most of his life. One early sonata, nicknamed the “Spring Sonata”, is a beautiful piece, not that technically demanding, and thus it is a favorite among pianists and violinists who want to try out Beethoven but aren’t up to the demands of his middle period sonatas.

The first movement is in the usual sonata format, i.e. two subjects with development and recapitulation, and it shows Beethoven in a relaxed mood. This is the kind of music you can waller in.
