Would You Practice Polygamy If It Were Legal?
Slate ^ | Friday, July 26, 2013 | Faye Wang

No.

And not because of moral reasons, it's simply a matter of practicality. I've never seen a polygamous relationship in which every participant was happy and content. Because of my research into alternative lifestyles, I actually know a lot of people who are in polygamous relationships (there are support groups for that, you know). I don't think it is immoral, as long as all parties involved are consenting adults.

However in practice, such a relationship requires way too much energy to maintain, and one or two people are always left feeling unhappy, undervalued, not needed, and not loved. Human beings are selfish and possessive, especially when they're in love. Very few people are capable of sharing their loved ones with other people, even under the pretense that you receive love from the other person. This is especially true if the polygamous relationship is 1 male + multiple females or 1 female + multiple males. One will undoubtedly become the favorite, and the other will end up resentful and feeling depressed.

An ideal situation, which most polygamous relationships I knew were trying to achieve, is somewhat a "network" of love, instead of a pyramid. For example, in a relationship with one male and three females, if the love exists only between the male and each female, it's not going to work. It has to be male and female, and female and female, in other words, everyone needs to love everyone.

[[[The key word here is “consenting”, i.e. they want to do it.]]]

Exactly. Some people will want to do polygamy even if Slate writers do not. Recently a man in South Korea officially married his blue pillow. Not every man will want to do that. But the fact that the man could create his own pillow-marriage will erode the traditional male-female definition of marriage even further.

I well established man should be able to take on a younger wife, with the first wives consent. This takes the sex burden off of the the mid fifties wifey who usually(not always) has lost interest in sex.

people sleep around and shack up all the time, what is stupid is asking the state (ie: society) to approve of it

Jostling for my kids - that part can get extreme.
Look up dynastic struggles of the Turkish Sultans.
The moment the old guy croaked, there was a rush for the prize among all the women’s sons. One winner, the losers got terminated with a silk bowstring.

So many folks in this thread seem so dissatisfied with their current marriages...

Weird. I’ve been with the same woman almost twenty years and i think the only thing wrong with her is that I can’t clone her...

There are wars of succession, so to speak, in monogamous families, as well, particularly where there is a family business to inherit. But I imagine the difficulties are greatly magnified when there are more wives and sons.

I do not understand how any man can think that he can tolerate more than one woman at a time.

Also, there is a saying: When three people ‘get together’ two of them will cheat on the other.

I barely have time to keep the one I have happy. Another? No thanks!

There are some kinds of stupid I don't have to be.

It might be legal in this hypothesis but it still wouldn’t be safe.

"The TLC program “Sister Wives” claims to show a happy polygamous family, but at least two of those wives are very unhappy over the addition of wife number four, and that is evident just from catching glimpses of commercials for the program."

All of the women on that show prattle about polygamy "bringing out the best in a person", but they are all miserable. They whine constantly about the lack of tolerance for their lifestyle, and they all support sodomite marriage. The idiot husband says that "all the cool guys" in the Old Testament had multiple wives.

Yes.
I would be gay and marry nine men so we could have a softball team.

Yep. Gays just want our approval of their abnormal lifestyle. Wherever gay marriage is legalized, most gays don’t get married. It’s more fun to sleep around. Marriage would get in the way of that.

"complaining all day"

How did you capture what I was thinking? Any man who is "tied" to more than one woman is an idiot. However, I do love my wife. But just one version of her.

"feelings"

I had a woman I was living with (not married to) who one time asked me about my feelings. What did I feel, she asked me. I told her I was feeling pretty hungry at the moment, and could she cook me some dinner. The relationship did not last long.

Someone told me that being married to two women is “bigamy.”

I said sometimes I think it's pretty damned big o’ me to put up with one woman!

One wife is lonely;
Two wives cannot be happy;
Three wives, two will take sides against one;
Four wives, two will be friends and the other 2 will be bickering;
Five wives is tranquility.

I’m not going to start practicing polygamy. I’ve been practicing monogamy 41 years and still haven’t got it right. Apparently, it takes a LOT of practice.
