[Wis. Catholic] Hospitals can't deny admitting privileges to abortion doctors, AG says

Plans by three Catholic hospital systems in Wisconsin to deny admitting privileges to doctors who perform abortions would "be in active violation of federal law," Attorney General J. B. Van Hollen's Department of Justice said in a court filing last week.

Federal law "provides that hospitals accepting federal funds may not discriminate against a physician because that physician has participated in or refused to participate in abortions," the state Justice Department said in its filing in federal court.

According to experts on federal law, if doctors can prove they were not granted privileges specifically because they perform the procedure, the hospital systems —Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare, Columbia St. Mary's Health System and Hospital Sisters Health System — could lose federal dollars in the form of research and public health grants.

Doctors who perform abortions would be required to obtain privileges at hospitals within 30 miles of their clinics under a new law that has been blocked until at least November by a federal judge. Seven doctors who provide abortions in the state lack privileges, and at least four are applying for them at religiously affiliated hospitals, according to their employer, Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin.

The hospitals said they would not grant privileges to abortion providers, following confusion over their stance in federal court. In the abortion providers' challenge to the law, their attorneys said the privileges requirement would be especially difficult to meet because a large proportion of Wisconsin hospitals are religiously affiliated and opposed to abortion.

Since when does a payer determine what services a company provides? It’s like going to a steak house and demanding tofu. You want tofu, fine, go somewhere else, we don’t sell it.

Accepting federal money is the rope by which it hangs public schools, construction, religious hospitals - even entire states. I think churches, too, are going to have to jettison their tax exempt status if they want to continue their theological independence.

The tentacles of the federal government are long and strong once we accept the money. States, businesses, and churches need to cut their monetary ties to the feds.

” ...think MediCare and MediCaid.”

Or Tricare or Champva.

And, once Obamacare kicks in, would not that include all “Exchange” insurance, too? (because of the federal “affordable premium credit” subsidies that will be pumped into them)

Would hospitals be permitted to deny admitting privileges to doctors who are murderers? If the answer is “yes” then, in the eyes of Catholics, Orthodox Jews and Evangelical Christians, (and others) there is no difference.

Good point. Can a hospital or doctor refuse to take medicare or medicaid?

I've been advocating that for years, especially in the church where I'm a member.

Pissing against the wind my friend.

One could argue that Medicare is not government money. That money belongs to those who paid in to it.

And Medicaid is a welfare program but since it is run by the individual states, it would fall under state law.

re: “ I’ve been advocating that for years, especially in the church where I’m a member. Pissing against the wind my friend.”

Well, yes and no. We all know that churches are going to be hit with lawsuits regarding not allowing same-sex marriages to be performed in their facilities, or even renting out church facilities to such “couples”. In fact, I think there is already a lawsuit regarding the former.

True Christian churches and pastors/priests are very soon going to have to make a choice: “Serve God or money”. I cringe at the thought of how many churches and church leaders will go with the money.

However, in my circles, there are several Baptist pastors who are already discussing this possibility and that they are going to let the 501c go if it comes to that. I know these men and I believe them. Many churches are going to lose their buildings and property because of having to pay taxes on that property because they just will not have the money to pay the taxes and pay for building upkeep, ministerial salaries, mission projects, study materials, etc.

I guess we’ll have to do what the church has always done - go underground when under persecution. It’s been that way since the beginning and is still that way right now in many places in the world.

But, as Jesus said, “the world hates you because it hates Me, but, be of good cheer, for I have overcome the world.”

Also keep an eye open for young christian teenage women being required to do the community service in abortion clinics.......

One thing the left knows without a doubt, conservatives are cowards and will do absolutely nothing to stop what is going on, all you hear is outrage, I said outrage at what is happening.

Let me tell you what Indira Ghandi said when a company that was being financed by the government refused to do what the government directed; “IF I’M FEEDING THE BIRD, THAT BIRD IS GOING TO SING MY SONG”. This is what happens when any company takes “GOVERNMENT” money. You cannot choose which rule you will obey and which ones you will not. Who did they think they are, OBAMA? Only Obama can pick and choose which law or rule he will follow and which ones he will not. You cannot make a deal with “EVIL”, anytime and any place. “EVIL” will always win. They have 2 choices, these Catholic hospitals, either not take government money, and live by their own rules, or take government money and do as the government directed.

Easy solution.

Tell the feds to shove their “funds” up their collective smelly Obamas.

Sooner or later, we’ve just got to dump the federal government.

It is beyond corrupt, and is current manned and womaned by inept sleazebags with the collective IQ of a CNN reporter.
