Syria crisis: warplanes spotted in Cyprus as tensions rise in Damascus

Warplanes and military transporters have begun arriving at Britain's Akrotiri airbase on Cyprus, less than 100 miles from the Syrian coast, in a sign of increasing preparations for a military strike against the Assad regime in Syria.

Two commercial pilots who regularly fly from Larnaca on Monday told the Guardian that they had seen C-130 transport planes from their cockpit windows as well as small formations of fighter jets on their radar screens, which they believe had flown from Europe.

Residents near the British airfield, a sovereign base since 1960, also say activity there has been much higher than normal over the past 48 hours.

If an order to attack targets in Syria is given, Cyprus is likely to be a hub of the air campaign.

Resources are moving into the area.

The big question: Is Russia re-allocating resources into the area? Because that would be bad.

Russia has a base in Syria. Is an ally and supplies their arms. Russia told us a dozen times to stay out of this.

Absolutely. But the question is: Has Russia begun beefing up their position?

Apparently, a coalition is forming, too. Like most Americans, I wish we were not on the verge of this. If it's started, the Turks and friendly Arabs need to do the boots on the ground piece.

Seriously. If tomorrow were the day of the Normandy Invasion it would be all over Twitter by now.

AFAIK, the closest Russian forces other than Tartus are near Sevestapol on the Black Sea. Russia really doesn’t have much to build up.

“But the question is: Has Russia begun beefing up their position?”

They’ve moved several ships and attack aircraft. Also, Syria’s air defenses are being controlled (or were) by three Russian radar ships. I’ve read they’ve moved marines (their equivalent) into the area to “protect Russian civilians.”

The danger here is that somebody spoofs an attack from either Russia or the USA on the other.

No room for pretenses these days,, Syria is the Normandy of its day, fake C130s or not..

History is a cruel taskmaster.

Sadly, those in control seemed hell-bent to take it to a new level.

Maybe President Cruz or Palin can hand over obama to the world court for war crimes. How’s that nobel prize committee these days. Are you happy with your communist kenyan?

Russia told us a dozen times to stay out of this.

Any other time I would suggest we tell Putin to GFH, now I don't know what to think.
