Trying to raise a family on a fast-food salary

Fast-food workers in more than 50 cities Thursday are striking for fair pay and the right to form a union — the biggest walkout to hit the industry.

What can we do to address this low-wage jobs crisis? Exerting pressure on the fast-food and retail giants that rake in billions in profits is a good starting point. These companies can afford to share more of their wealth with their frontline workers and should be doing so.

Boosting wages for America’s lowest-paid workers is a crucial step toward reducing economic inequality and rebuilding a strong economy. Perhaps 50 years from now, we’ll look back on the fast-food workers’ fight as the catalyst we so desperately needed.

The jobs would have to be guaranteed by the government dole in some manner of fashion.

I would love to think that there would finally be a rebellion against this runaway government but, increasingly, I am convinced that we will do nothing. More disturbing, zero is showing the left what they can get away with and not be held accountable.

Without action by the people to restore the government to the limits imposed by the Constitution, the America we grew up with is dead. The Founders have spun so much in their graves that their bones are little more than splinters and pencil points. We did not protect or preserve the government they worked so hard to create and gave up so much to establish. More's the pity.

I read somewhere the average ff franchise makes $60k profit / year.

So I imagine $15/hr could put them out of business quite rapidly.

Then again I can see the day where each place will likely have 2 employees / shift and the rest of the work automated.

There was another one of these idiots on O’Reilly last night. He was going on about how raising the minimum wage meant that everyone would have more money to spend, which would mean they would buy more things, which would pump more money into the economy and stimulate growth. I had to change the channel before I threw the remote at the TV. I understand “fair and balanced,” but I don’t understand giving a forum to blatant stupidity.

What they ignore is that McDonald's and Yum! don't own the individual outlets. They're owned by small business men and women

Small business?

Do you know what single Mc'D's franchise cost? And many of these franchise owners own multiple franchises.

Your talking many *millions* here.

It's why so many foreigners with big bucks, many from Mideastern countries have opened up franchises here....They are buying up all the typical hotel chains, 7-11 greedy marts, gas stations and fast food jackball type franchises.

Trust me, most of these are NOT owned by Uncle Bob and Aunt Betty from Hogjaw Kansas.

The other thing missing from this debate is all of the benefits given to those who only work part time, especially those with children.
EITC can be a several thousand dollar income boost to someone making $5-10K in a minimum wage part time job. That is on top of childcare subsidies, SNAP, discounts on utilities, etc. Therefore, very few people with children making this wage are living on that little.

Unfortunately, without it all crashing down, there isn’t a lot we can do.

We’ve tried elections, the Dems lie, cheat, steal, and fix the things, while we fight our own fifth column of Vichy Republicans. Here in Arizona, it’s all we have.

Hitting “ctrl+alt+del” is about the only option we have. If we do not take over the government and restore the Constitution as the law of the land and severely limit what a federal government can do, America is dead.

I'm sure you have heard about the movement in Colorado to make North Colorado the 51st state. While that will probably not succeed due to the bureaucratic requirements for passage, it will be interesting to see what they do next. For America to survive zero and the left, radical action is necessary.

Here, in Texas, Gov. Perry has talked a good story about seceding, but that's as far as he is willing to go. If we the people who own this government don't shut it down and take control of it, the America we grew up and fought for is no more.
