How to find and buy firearms, ammunition and related items online

Are you having trouble finding firearms or magazines, but especially ammunition in stock and at reasonable prices?

I have had a number of people tell me they can’t find ammunition. Since early February, I have bought and sold many rounds of ammunition and a number of firearms, magazines and other accessories over the Internet. I’ve also sold literally thousands of rounds of the ammunition I found to friends and coworkers. I shared with them how I do it, and now I share here as well.

I have been so busy in my “day job”, that I had not noticed there was already a panic underway until the Gun Show the first weekend of December 2012. There I learned that the ammunition vendors sold out their entire stock of .223 and 5.56 mm ammunition within two hours.

Then on December 14 a psychotic boy murdered his own mother and 20 six and seven year old kids, and six adults with his mother’s AR-15 at Sandy Hook Elementary school. In the aftermath began a firestorm of debate over whether to expand national gun control laws. Subsequent fears of a new ban on AR and AK type weapons and high capacity magazines fueled an epic buying frenzy.

Now in late-August, the panic of 2013 has subsided, somewhat. Firearms and ammunition are appearing on store shelves again, but gunpowder and some calibers of ammunition continue to be difficult to find or non-existent.

Here’s how to find the ammunition that is available and how to buy through eBay style auction web sites like Gun Broker, Gun Auction and Guns America, and find deals through online commercial vendors using search sites like Slickguns, Gun-deals and Ammo Seek......

The ammo problem is easing. .22LR is still a problem, but you can get other ammo fairly easily and for something approaching reasonable prices.

Go to your big sports stores and look. Cabela’s, Bass Pro, etc. Local gun stores too.

Walmart is about the worst place to look. It’s part of their “never in stock” pledge to you.

"I’m having trouble finding 81mm. The local Walmart is out."

WalMart was completely out of surplus 149 mm Panzerfaust the last time I was there.

On a more serious note, some of the prices I've seen on Gunbroker, etc. have been silly. I'm in okay shape, and I haven't overpaid too much for anything.

(Ummmmm, the shipping is pricey for a 100 round box of 22LR, which is Cabela's limit for .22 -- but it's still no worse than the panic prices on Gunbroker. And it's good stuff -- that's why it's sold in the neat plastic 100 round boxes and not the bulk packs.)

I’ve found really good prices and availability at Georgia Arms. Their “canned heat” item is 500 rounds bulk, shipped in an ammocan.

Can I use 80 mm slugs in 81 mm casings?

I think I saw a YouTube video where a guy was doing that by necking down the casings.

*********************************************

I was recently given about 5,000 old Slobovian manufacture 80 mm lead hollow-point slugs

Oh, those cases full of "spam cans". I'll bet he got those from J & G Sales.

Sometimes you get duds with that old East Bloc ammo, but the biggest problem is that it's so dirty. Just be sure and clean the mortar muzzle with Windex out in the field when you're done for the day and you should be fine.

If you do reload your 81 mm, don’t experiment with +P.

Yeah, I like them. They usually have a table at the local show.

I think Buffalo Bore makes some standard pressure rounds that perform like 81mm +P and are low flash to boot.

I had already stockpiled. The only thing I lacked was a can of ffffg for my flintlock to insure I didn't run out. I drove to Union City, Tennessee, and purchased several pounds of fffg and two cans of ffffg. There was no limit on the number of pounds of gunpowder I could buy either.

Have you seen the recent hickok45 video on YouTube, wherein he fires black powder reloads in a Glock?

82MM is plentiful, just get a 9 pound maul and drive it into the chamber, it’ll work.

I reloaded a couple of boxes of 9mm last night. Component replacements are still tight though.
