Bozell Column: The Vanishing Anti-War Left

Barack Obama ran for president as the last of the red-hot pacifists, so it might have sounded preposterous to predict that after a few security briefings at the White House, President Obama would follow in the same policy footsteps of horrid warmonger George Bush, with his anti-terrorist wars and strategies.

So where is the anti-war movement now?

As I recall, the “Puff The Magic Dragon” song was about smoking dope, correct?

I remember “Puff” a little differently - “Puff The Magic Dragon” was a Douglas C47 Skytrain equipped with a waist-mounted 7.62 caliber electric Vulcan Minigun ... and he didn’t live by the sea.

But he DID kill some bad people wallowing in the autumn mist in a land called Vietnam-ee....

RE :”As I recall, the “Puff The Magic Dragon” song was about smoking dope, correct?”

If I read that over the years I forgot it already . That was ~ 50 years ago. .

You see my parents wouldnt have known that. They were oblivious to what was going on. To them it was an innocent kids song. I recall my neighbor kid across the street told my class it was my favorite song because I was new to that school and was too shy to answer myself.

Didnt Puff ‘live by the sea’ ?

I don’t know about an antiwar movement, but a stroll over to Daily Kos or Democratic Underground will show how angry libs are at Obama over Syria. They even have a petition dontattacksyria.com.

You are likely correct..but anger on those sites is palpable. They are calling Obama “Bush Jr”., and targeting undecideds on this vote. Some even saying they will leave the Dem Party over this issue. One poster saying they may go to Tea Party over Bill of Rights issues. I see as much or more anger at those sites over Syria as on FR. Don’t misunderstand..I’m not defending Libs here..just saying..I think anger over Syria transcends Party Lines.

>>> Democrats and the left are very easy to understand. They will take any position that helps their agenda on any given day. It doesnt matter if it opposite of their position yesterday as long as it helps them today. Usually that means trying to destroy, undermine or slander their opponents or their own country. Wars are bad and gassing children is bad, except when done by RATS or their allies. Killing terrorists is bad when done by Repubs, good when done by RATS. Domestic spying, same thing. There are many many examples. <<

If the left is so seething with rage over Syria, have you heard a SINGLE Obama cheerleader publicly renounce him and say they would have voted for a different Dem in the RAT primary if they could do it over again? I haven't. The Kucinich crowd is at least consistently "anti-war" 100% of the time and would love to impeach Obama, but they make up about 5% of RAT primary voters, and never supported Obama in the RAT primary to begin with.

From what I see, the left is privately VERY "troubled" by Syria and they're babbling amongst themselves about how Obama must have been "bought" by the "military-industrial complex" (as if Obama had been previously been a heroic reformer and not a political hack and machine puppet). However, most of them seem to be trying to find a way to demonstrate how Obama's actions are DIFFERENT than Iraq, because no way in hell do they want to push him in the same category as the ultimate evil "war criminal", George W. Bush. The problem they have is none of them have been able to think of a valid excuse, so they're "torn" over the issue... by their own standards, Obama is a go-it-alone unilaterial cowboy who is bullying the world and killing innocent people, but you know, he "means well".

Basically, the difference between us and them is that WE have no problem expressing buyer's remorse in public if one of our guys sells us out (Paul Ryan, Marco Rubio). But the left will NEVER publicly come out against one of the marxist RATs they helped elect, no matter how much they may grumble about him when they're around other RATs. To say ANYTHING bad about Obama would help the dreaded "racist, sexist, homophobic, corporate-loving eeeeeeeeeeeeeevil Rethuglicans" and they cannot allow that. I can guarantee you that no matter HOW "upset" they get with Obama, if you put a gun to their head and had them do the 2012 election over again, they would vote FOR Obama to "stop Romney". Third party is skipping that part of the ballot is unacceptable because the GOP would benefit. RATs are blindly loyal to their own NO MATTER WHAT

The same is true when Bush was in power or any of the previous RAT leaders (Clinton, etc.). They will never ever denounce a RAT publicly for "waging war". Any Republican who voted for Iraq would be hounded forever by anti-war protesters who called them baby-killers and demanded the politician send own their sons and daughters to war. Any RAT who voted for Iraq would be immediately forgiven, because, you know, Bush "tricked them". For example, Rod Blagojevich voted for "Bush's war". Did you ever see a single leftist raise the issue and criticize Blago's judgment about it when he ran for Governor?

Call me cynical, but the lefties are laying low and will admit they "personally" think Syria is a terrible idea if you force them to talk about the subject, but they will never, EVER, publicly attack Obama over it.

Every semester where I teach, a table of t-shirt sellers sets up in the cafeteria. The t-shirts are predictable in their anti-conservative, pro-motherearthiness, sarcasm towards Republican presidents, and so on. So, I stop at the t-shirt table and look around and ask the longer-haired salesman, “Where’s the Obama one?” He looks up blankly and blinks. I’m like, “You know, he won the Nobel Peace prize and how he wants to bomb Syria, supports the civil war in Egypt. You need a t-shirt for that.” He stares some more and blinks further. “Let me know when you get one,” says I. Then I leave. It was nice.

LOL. Sweet.... thanks for sharing AD...

Sick - that's so sweet. Odd thinking of you as the new kid in a school - and shy - and liking Puff the Magic Dragon. But on this they're right - it was a doper song... Also, in case you're wondering Jefferson Airplane's White Rabbit - - LSD song...

RE :”Also, in case you're wondering Jefferson Airplane's White Rabbit - - LSD song...”

That one could not be mistaken. (Grace Slick BTW). Nor would 'I am the Walrus'

However Puff the magic Dragon who lived by the Sea was not a weird sounding psychedelic song like White Rabbit, it sounds just like a song Mr Rogers would sing.

>> Back to Syria, well they are stilling hoping that Obama will make noise and do little. <<

Very true. Here's what I've seen thus far:

1) Of the grassroots liberal Obamabots I know (the outspoken ones who were screaming "Bush lied, people died; screaming about Haliburton and oil; gloating about Obama getting bin Laden; gloating about his re-election, etc.), MOST of them are laying low and not saying a damn thing about Syria. I have no doubt they'd be SCREAMING at the top of their lungs if it was Bush in Obama's situation now, but they clearly aren't comfortable making any sort of comment.

2) Of the FEW grassroots Obamabots I know who ARE talking (2 or 3 people tops), they seem to be assuring themselves... "okay, I think he's gonna get a use of force resolution approved... and then NOT use it... but it will just scare the heck out of Assad and he'll flee the country on his own and the situation will be magically resolved without bloodshed and the world will love 0bama again!"

3) The other scenario they go back and forth in public discussions is only if rosy scenario above doesn't play out out. It's the "what if Obama goes into Syria?" Here, they're torn... "I really really don't like that idea... but I GOTTA trust Obama's judgment... but... but... war is bad!! But Obama is GOOD!! AGGGGGGGGGGH!!!"

4) Of the professional nationally known Dem officials, hilariously, the most outspoken "anti-war" RATs from the Bush years (Howard Dean, Al Franken, John Kerry, Dick Durbin, Nancy Pelosi, Barbara Boxer, etc.) seem to have become "let's go get 'em!!" cowboy, neo-con hawks overnight. The RAT delegate from D.C. explained why. (can't make 0bama look bad!)

5) Ironically, the black congressional caucus seems to be leaning against going into Syria. But they'd do it if you could draft more white boys.

6) The Kuncinch wing of the party and people like him (the usual nuts who get 2% of the vote in the RAT primary, because they're nuttier than "mainstream" nuts like Dean) is totally against and wants Obama impeached for Syria. But they've always wanted him impeached and always opposed any war, so nothing's new.

7) I'm not sure where the outspoken GOP-hating, Obama-loving, liberal Hollywood celebs (Susan Surandon and her ilk) are on this one. It would be hilarious is Michael Moore suddenly flip-flopped and became a pro-war hawk overnight, for example. He's flip-flopped before numerous times (totally wanted the Pope involved in politics during the Iraq war, said the Pope was a pedophile enabler who needed to shut up and go away during the gay marriage debate and Obamacare debate). It's doubtful Moore would flip on something like this though, since he likes to maintain an aura of being "against" the Washington establishment.

Just like the homo left is all about “tolerance” until they get power and then its woe unto those who openly disagree.
