Goodonyamate.

Rudd cynically and desperately touted gay marriage.

Most of the Aussie press are not amused, given they are lefties.

Newt’s seat was safe in the 90’s, the most Republican in GA at the time. He had a competitive seat before the 1992 remap. The rats tried to get rid of him by carving up his district. He chose to run in the new Republican seat they drew in Atlanta suburbs (I don’t think any of his former district was in it), he moved there and won the primary by less than 1000 votes.

I’m not aware of any country where they elect the PM directly, Israel adopted that idea during the 90’s but abolished the practice after 3 elections because it didn’t help form more stable governments like they wanted. Israel uses a party list and proportional representation so 1 party winning a majority is impossible, nothing like the Westminster systems.

I’d consider moving there if they got rid of their stupid gun control laws.

No - but there really doesn’t seem to be a need for it. No problem of that nature has been identified here.

Other forms of electoral fraud have occurred, but not people impersonating voters in any significant numbers.

The pre-1992 6th District ran from the south Atlanta suburbs to west along the Alabama border. At the time, Newt hailed from Carrollton, which was near the state line. Democrat GA House Speaker Tom Murphy was anxious to sack him following his close shave in the 1990 general. The 6th was eliminated and split between the 3rd and the 7th.

Carrollton was moved into the 7th (though the 7th itself, which ran from the NW Atlanta suburbs to the Chattanooga suburbs had been sliced up — this had been the legendary Larry McDonald’s district, and won by the more liberal Buddy Darden). Newt moved to the old 7th’s Cobb County portion. As mentioned, he nearly lost the primary to a State Rep who was a local, but had an easier time in the general.

Democrat Darden held Newt’s old western district handily, Republican Mac Collins took the old southern/eastern portion (now the 3rd). Had Newt run against Darden in ‘92, he probably would’ve lost. He might’ve been able to carry the 3rd (had Collins not been in the way), but his move to Cobb County was still a risky move. As it was, Darden was only able to hold on to the new 7th for just the one additional term, as Bob Barr, fresh off of placing 2nd in the Senate primary to Paul Coverdell in 1992, took out Darden in ‘94.
