Mark Steyn: Blunt words about Muslim backwardness
National Post ^ | 6 Sep 2013 | Mark Steyn

Posted on 09/07/2013 12:20:59 PM PDT by Rummyfan

In 2010, the bestselling atheist Richard Dawkins, in the “On Faith” section of the Washington Post, called the pope “a leering old villain in a frock” perfectly suited to “the evil corrupt organization” and “child-raping institution” that is the Catholic Church. Nobody seemed to mind very much.

Three years later, in a throwaway Tweet, Professor Dawkins observed that “all the world’s Muslims have fewer Nobel Prizes than Trinity College, Cambridge. They did great things in the Middle Ages, though.” This time round, the old provocateur managed to get a rise out of folks. Almost every London paper ran at least one story on the “controversy.” The Independent‘s Owen Jones fumed, “How dare you dress your bigotry up as atheism. You are now beyond an embarrassment.” The best-selling author Caitlin Moran sneered, “It’s time someone turned Richard Dawkins off and then on again. Something’s gone weird.” The Daily Telegraph‘s Tom Chivers beseeched him, “Please be quiet, Richard Dawkins, I’m begging.”

It’s factually unarguable: Trinity College graduates have amassed 32 Nobel prizes, the entire Muslim world a mere 10

Exactly. Arabs weren’t always Muslim...The reason for the Arab decline was due to Islam.

The great Mark Steyn is WRONG; factually inaccurate.

He writes that the entire Muslim world has TEN Nobel prizes.

WRONG!! IT IT ELEVEN!! HE FORGOT TO COUNT OBAMA'S

I’m not a fan of Dawkins’ writing, nor the late Christopher Hitchens for that matter, but they both should be defended for their writing as much as Mark Steyn, and Mark seems to agree. (Besides, Hitchens had a big plus going for him: He couldn’t stand the Royals.)

Steyn is a truly great man.

They did great things in the Middle Ages, though.

The 12th century philosopher and mathematician Averroes actual did a lot of good work and was a great influence on western philosophy (in a good way). He would not stand a chance today.

For starters, they wouldn't have much use for this nice statue of him in Spain:

I got a theory.

There are 2 sides in history, God’s and Satan’s.

Satan rebelled out of pride, so we are taught. Why would it be any different for the angels who fell with him?

So while my theory is that while the demons in Hell will work together against Christ, they will also stab each other in the back when an opportunity arises.

That’s why, whatever the differences in ideology, or other motives, of his followers, thye all hate Christianity, and the Western world that it created.

Now there might be those who would prefer a more secular explanation, and I’m fine with that. But the observation seems indisputable that they all have a common enemy.

As always, Steyn is BRILLIANT.

But may I be the first (female) FReeper to add to the thread...

TTIWWP.

I’ll await the photographic onslaught.

-——A couple of books (by Ward-Perkins and Emmet Scott) propose that the decline of western Europe in the Middle Ages was not really due to the barbarian invasions; but to the end of trade in the Mediterranean,
which was a direct result of the Islamic conquest.——

Amazing what you don’t learn in our education system....

In fact, most of what they “did”, they borrowed from the Hindus.

The Mohammedans had Aristotles writings many centuries before Christendom, yet made little progress with his teachings.

Once Aristotle's writings made their way to the West, medieval scholars, like Aquinas, synthesized his teachings with Church dogma, resulting in the historical apex of scholarship --Scholasticism.

I think it’s simpler than all that. They fear muslims, but have no fear of Christians. A few honest atheists will deride Islam as well as any other religion, but most are too cowardly.
