Wal-Mart said it will go forward with plans to open stores in Washington D.C. now that the capital's mayor has vetoed legislation that would require large retailers to pay higher wages.

Mayor Vincent Gray on Thursday overturned a new law, which would have required big box stores like Wal-Mart (WMT, Fortune 500) to pay no less than $12.50 an hour in combined wages and benefits. The city's current minimum wage is $8.25.

I’d be careful if I were Wal-Mart.

Verify BEFORE Trust.

Myself, I NEVER trust a democrat.

Does Walmart really think there will not be future efforts and votes to impose the living wage? This was just Round #1. No wonder their stock price has gone sideways over the last year.

Is it? What are the requirements to override a veto in the district of corruption?

9 votes of the 13 seat council. The bill passed with 8.

The Rats want “living wages” for unskilled jobs because they know that all the high-paying unskilled jobs are gone due to Rat corruption and are never coming back.

I would think that something in writing to avoid just that might have been done. If not a baaaaad move.

Ya, they will see other higher costs of doing business in DC, aside from if this high wage law ever passes in the future. They will see increaesed costs of security, “shrinkage” of inventory, and shoplifting. If I recall correctly, Wal-Mart actively prosecutes all shoplifters. But, that will also increase their legal costs, as I think they will see much more shoplifting in DC than some other places.

Even without the high wage law, I wondered why they thought it was a good idea to put stores in the District of Columbia.

They will either over ride the veto, or wait until the stores are open and push for the wages again.

You can't tie the hands of future Mayors and City Councils in a contract with Walmart. Plus I suspect this Mayor is now Target Numero Uno for the assembled Left. This will be back.

It is actually a very portable business; any airplane hangar will do.

It is easy for Wal-Mart to close up shop. On the other hand, they just want their piece of the welfare redistribution touted by Nancy Pelosi (as though welfare payments are a stimulus unto themselves).

Why should Wal-Mart lose out to bodegas in selling to our permanent underclass?

Shrinkage doesn’t matter. They’ll deal with what they can and write the rest off. The obvious reason they want to be in DC so bad is that they are the largest grocer in the world. In DC you have a community that is probably 80% on Food Stamps. Wouldn’t you want to operate a business in a market where 80% of your clients didn’t have to pay with their own money? They’ll make millions.

I didn’t realize that a food stamp customer base was so profitable. Then, they will see those profits offset other expected operating costs.
