(Reuters) - The Republican-run House of Representatives voted to cut spending on food stamps for the poor by $40 billion on Thursday, defying a veto threat from the White House in the name of fiscal reform.

Majority Leader Eric Cantor, the driving force behind the legislation, said "it's wrong for working, middle-class people to pay" for abuse of the program, whose costs have skyrocketed in recent years. Democrats pointed to nonpartisan estimates that the bill would end benefits to 4 million needy people in 2014.

Don’t be ashamed. You paid into it. Plus, you’ve been trying to find work, and aren’t one of the abusers. God bless you, take care. I hope you’re employed soon.

Do what talk show host Larry Elder’s dad did. Go sit at unemployment, tell them you’ll be there everyday until you get a job, and then take anything. I know it’s hard. My roomate is over 60, and has given up because of age discrimination.

Best wishes!

The bill's savings would be achieved by allowing states to put broad new work requirements in place for many food stamp recipients and to test applicants for drugs. The bill also would end government waivers that have allowed able-bodied adults without dependents to receive food stamps indefinitely.

Again, many, many people in cities do not have access to cooking facilities or food storage.

I can find no warrant for such an appropriation in the Constitution, and I do not believe that the power and duty of the general government ought to be extended to the relief of individual suffering which is in no manner properly related to the public service or benefit. A prevalent tendency to disregard the limited mission of this power and duty should, I think, be steadfastly resisted, to the end that the lesson should be constantly enforced that, though the people support the government, the government should not support the people.

The friendliness and charity of our countrymen can always be relied upon to relieve their fellow citizens in misfortune. This has been repeatedly and quite lately demonstrated. Federal aid in such cases encourages the expectation of paternal care on the part of the government and weakens the sturdiness of our national character, while it prevents the indulgence among our people of that kindly sentiment and conduct which strengthens the bonds of a common brotherhood.

Yes what you are referring to is TANF - temp assistance for needy families.

A station here in Indy got an electronic file of where Indiana TANF card swipes were made. Vegas, Disney (Fl and Ca), Hawaii, Nevada brothels, yadda yadda.

Yes, I aware of that. My point is that there is more than one type of benefit on the EBT card, and many people are totally unaware of that.

The abuses of what is now called TANF funds is just more obvious because it can be electronically tracked - but anyone who doesn’t think welfare checks went to those type things in the past needs their head examined.

Bad timing, bad priority, bad PR. Instead working on defunding obamacare, they decided to deal with food stamps?

NO ONE will have to be cut off if they would reinstitute limits on what can be purchased.

Exactly. This "thing" turned into a wholesale fleecing of the taxpayer; cry me a river that I don't give a damn that the precious snowflakes actually have to tighten their belts like I have been doing.

Yeah, there’s so many jobs out there too.

Then cut back to mad dog 20/20 then. We're all making sacrifices in this full blown recovering obama economy.

As I have said to others on this thread, not everyone is a scammer. There are many who need FS to survive. I’m glad you were never in that position. But there are seniors, students, people who haven’t been able to find employment who need this. Thankfully it won’t pass the Senate. In the meantime, the Dems scored big. Who’s boo-freaking-hoo now?

I can't believe you have been here so long and are such a complete idiot, must be a sleeper dumpster kiddie.

The PROBLEM is government and the lazy voter who want's shit for free. The "general welfare" in the Constitution wasn't so "students" could kick their feet up and check out womyn's studiez nor was it for seniors who couldn't foresee having to actually support themselves when they were too old to work. Likewise, food stamps are not a given, they come in part from the labor I do to EARN wealth, wealth which is stolen from me by the federal government.
