The commanding officer of Carrier Air Wing 17 was relieved of duty Friday following allegations of an inappropriate relationship with a female junior officer under his command, the Navy announced Saturday.
Capt. Jeffrey S. Winter was relieved by Rear Adm. David Steindl, commander of the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinsons strike group, due to a loss of confidence in Winters ability to command, according to the statement.
The command investigation into Winters conduct remains ongoing. Winter has been reassigned to Pacific Fleet Naval Air Forces headquarters pending the outcome.
Commanders relieved of duty for alleged misconduct are typically sent to a headquarters command. Officers found to have engaged in misconduct generally face a Navy board that determines whether they should be allowed to continue serving, unless they voluntarily retire.
Winter was first assigned to the USS Carl Vinson in December 2011. He assumed command of the air wing in June.
Winter is a former Top Gun instructor who graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1989. He received his first operational assignment in 1993 at Naval Air Facility Atsugi, Japan.
Capt. Matthew L. Leahey, the air wings deputy commander, has temporarily assumed command duties.
Thought he was like Bill Clinton or something I guess
Betcha that if it was homosex, we’d never hear about it and nobody would be removed from their post for it.
And if we did hear about it, it would be to promote it for political purposes.
And if he’d don it with a man they wouldn’t say a damn thing.
don=DONE
Sheesh!
Is there an echo in here?
wouldn’t doubt it
Lol!
Reads that way!
Worst part is, we’re right.
A lot of that going around in the Navy these days. Wonder why?
Evil serves as CiC so.........
Just damn. Top gun driver...big loss to the air wing and the fleet...all for a piece of ass.
And I concur with my fellow Freepers that had it been a homosexual relationship the current PTB wouldn't bat an eyelash.
Sorry state of affairs. d:^)
Why? You know why. Because introducing women into the combat team means introducing the romantic element onto the combat team. I’ve always been interested to see what would happen if the Navy went to single sex ships?
Had it been a homo relationship, no prob. To have penalized for that would have been homophobic.
Ooops...HETERO! HE’S GOT TO GO...
The effectiveness, readiness, and efficiency of our military has been seriously compromised across the board by the need to provide separate facilities, rules, and regulations to accommodate women. Man/woman clashes in the workplace just about always result in the reassignment/resignation of the man, and, in many cases, a free ticket out of the service for pregnant women. My guess is that the number of incidents and clashes has increased exponentially since women were brought in.
How long will it take the navy to realize that the military before our forefathers got it right in that women on ships causes nothing but trouble?
long way from home, close quarters, raging hormones, who the hell wouldn’t wind up in this situation...pregnancy rate among female sailors returning from long deployments is shocking...this pc crap is destroying the navy as we knew it.
It’s our version of the Stalin purges; anytime a man acts like a man, publicly cut his sack off to let everyone know that only homo activity and females run this ship/ wing/ battalion / numbered command, etc., and for that matter, most of the previously testosterone-dominant USA. Time to consolidate supplies, sight your weapons, hunker down and wait for it.
