Shutdown puts WIC food program for vulnerable mothers at risk

Jason Sickles, Yahoo! 2 hours ago

DALLAS — In a shopping center parking lot 1,300 miles from Washington’s bureaucracy and bickering, teen mom Karina Luciano loaded a watermelon and baby formula into her car.

Luciano didn’t realize the federal assistance program that just purchased the food items for her children, Aimee, 2, and Jaiden, 11 months, is now in jeopardy because of the government shutdown.

“Oh my god, I think I’m going to cry,” Luciano said upon learning the news. “This is really bad.”

Nearly 9 million low-income mothers and children receive benefits under the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children. Congress’ inability to pass a funding bill forced the USDA, which oversees the $7 billion program, to shutter support for WIC’s clinical services, food and administrative costs.

“Due to the lapse in federal government funding, this website is not available,” read a message on the WIC page of USDA.gov.

The defunding, which doesn't affect USDA programs for school lunches and food stamps, is already producing consequences across the country.

Late on Tuesday, WIC officials in Utah closed all offices and canceled appointments until the federal government resumes operations.

“Utah WIC checks for the month of October are still being accepted at WIC authorized grocery stores,” the Utah Department of Health wrote on its website.

Formula is very expensive. Mother’s milk is better for nearly every baby. Nearly every woman is able to nurse her babies although it can be difficult at first. My conclusion is that nearly every unemployed woman should be nursing her babies and not giving them formula. Poor employed women have a reason to give formula.

AND, an 11 month baby is very close to being the recommended age of one year to drink cow’s milk.

If you go to flea markets, you will see a lot of hot ticket items like infant formula and Tide detergent going for less than they do in stores. I doubt the merchants have a business relationship with the wholesalers - I suspect they have a great business with WIC/EBT resellers.

So I am not crying for starving babies yet.

This program is a great help to poor people who can’t afford things,” Luciano said. “It’s very educational and helps teenage moms. Not having it is going to hurt a lot of families.”

Like subsidized rent for homes nicer than mine...
Like driving cars or suv’s nicer than mine...
Like having steak and lobster while I eat P@J...
Like having phones and plans nicer than mine...

Today’s poor is not poor, go back to the 30’s to see what poor is.

And don’t most churches have assistance ministries similar to this?

I can go to Walmart today and not worry about how many shoppers there would be normally.

"The kids are FAT: "

My local news anchor was hyperventilating over this WIC thing. While she emoted, a picture of the produce department was flashed on screen----big piles of fruits and vegetables.

Fruits and veggies are NOT what WIC folks are buying.

Those “mothers” shouldn’t have had children they cannot afford to feed.

Who the F cares? The scumbags on my wife’s side of the family rape us with this WIC stuff. Let them figure out how to feed the future welfare recipients that they shot out.

I’d love to know the percentage of folks on food stands that have a flat screen TV and cable.

My dumb sister used to rely/leech off the WIC program, there is a LOT of graft and corruption in that program.

She would send Mom and Dad cans of juice and cheese from the WiC program because she was a picky bitch that our family no longer has anything to do with because her stuipid good for nothing husband.

WIC is a supplemental program. It is actually better in my opinion than food stamps because there is no EBT and only prequalified nutritional food can be received however no kids are going to starve because of this unless they have totally worthless parents and grandparents.

Ping.

Starve babies and little children?

Hmmm, is this about genocide and population control?

Naw, this will starve a whole lot more grifters than it will legitimite helpless people...

Funny.

These guys are such poosies. We are living with adolescent bullies.

They have shut down the website for WIC, National Parks, etc.

They are giving the impression that finding is so dire even the website can’t be paid for.

But, it has been paid for already on a typical 5 year agreement.

Dishonest fks....
