Analysis: Shutdown strategy has wide U.S. Republican support
Reuters ^ | October 4, 2013 | Caren Bohan and Fred Barbash

Posted on Friday, October 04, 2013 2:27:10 PM by LucianOfSamasota

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Eager to exploit divisions among Republicans, Democrats have hammered the message that the U.S. government shutdown is the work of a small segment of House of Representatives Republicans on the far right.

In fact, support for the tactic that led to the shutdown - now in its fourth day - has proven to be far more solid and widespread among House Republicans than the Democratic portrayal.

That is because the far right, after the 2010 and 2012 congressional elections, is not a small segment at all - it represents probably 69 percent of the House Republican caucus.

Members who were endorsed by Tea Party organizations in the 2012 election make up a full third of the Republican caucus of 232 representatives.

Even more, about 160 members, a strong majority of the caucus, get high ratings from the ultra-conservative Club For Growth.

He’s deployed more guards to bar our World War II heroes from their memorial than he sent to Benghazi when our consulate was under attack.

The President is treating our veterans the same way he treated school kids when he cancelled their White House tours. When times called for obvious government belt-tightening, he took it out on kids rather than look for anything that would affect him personally. And while our vets are barricaded from the memorial they built with their heroism, the government “slim down” won’t affect Obama’s golf game or his family’s White House chefs.

Meanwhile, Republicans in Congress are attempting to fund the Veterans Administration and other essential functions, but Democrats are blocking them because they want to make any slim down look as awful as possible in order to deflect from what this whole slim down thing is about, which is their Obamacare train wreck.

Certainly, I hope you’re right. Seeing Cruz with a spine has possibly been a blow to the jaw to these career cavers. They are critically late, but “appear” to be playing along at the moment.

The people insisted.

Cruz was on the Bill Bennett radio show this morning and basically said he wouldn’t disclose the private conversations he had when asked about this incident.

The Senate doesn’t matter. The House is in control.

My state of Missouri has it’s own Judas, Sen. Roy Blunt. Since when did the Executive Branch control the House? IF the republicans cave, blink or give in on this..Obama will deem himself to be untouchable for the next 3 yrs.

They took Bill Bennett off my local talk show station and replaced him with Imus. Imus is a mentally challenged suckup who, like Larry King, thinks every book he ever read was “just great.”

Many call Cruz arrogant.

"Many" are cowards, liars, and back-stabbing traitors who've been exposed by Senator Ted Cruz.

History will show that Cruz is clearly in the right.

The Old GOP is on its’ last legs. They will be on the ash heap of history.

Thank you.

I still don’t recall armed NPS, although I see the rationale.

There a variety of NPS employees that are around and meeting the public. They are nature interpreters, historians, guides etc/ They are not “Rangers”

It is the “Rangers” that are armed.

Frankly, I think these people are being paid and promised that they will be paid. I think this is all about money. Not power so much as money. That, too, though.

Imagine if the GOPe Senators are being promised some sort of position in an 0bama dictatorship that eliminates the House.
