At last, the White House and Congress have agreed on something.
For the first time since mad-dash negotiations over the budget on Monday, the White House announced Friday that it would support a House spending bill -- this one, to provide back-pay for furloughed federal workers.
"Federal workers keep the nation safe and secure and provide vital services that support the economic security of American families," the White House said in a statement. "The administration appreciates that the Congress is acting promptly to move this bipartisan legislation and looks forward to the bill's swift passage."
The only other House bill that the Senate has approved and President Obama has signed in the last week has been a measure to pay the nation's military. The White House has threatened to veto every other bill, as the House pushes a series of mini-spending measures meant to fund certain agencies amid the partial government shutdown.
So far, the House has voted to fund the National Institutes of Health, the National Guard and Reserve, the National Park Service and the Department of Veterans Affairs.
More votes are scheduled for Friday, and the bill to retroactively pay furloughed workers is on the docket for Saturday.
Though the White House statement in support of that bill could be considered a minor victory for Republicans -- who have been pressuring Democrats to approve their mini-bills -- it did not signal a breakthrough in talks to re-open the government.

Back pay when they were off and not working? We need to keep that savings. Typical DC shenanigans.
This could end up being a 1 month or longer free vacation....
Federal workers have received back pay in every shutdown. The MSM portrays them as victims when the fact is that they are receiving paid vacations that will not be charged to their leave.
This will be the second funding bill to get through.
It’s like that joke about doing it for a million. Obama’s already said yes, now it’s just about price.
Because they’re special.
I’m beyond having sympathy for the great bulk of federal workers. Their activities only serve to make my life worse. They’re a gigantic direct expense for no value and what work product they do produce strangles every effort of those in the private sector to make a better life for themselves.
Back pay? Oh good! Tie it to defunding and repealing Bowbamacare!
NO!
You didn’t work, you don’t get paid.
This is why we MUST STOP government from negotiating with the public labor force. There is no common sense negotiation but they just hand over our money. There is not a single person at the negotiation table with the interest of the very people who pay the bills in mind.
Welcome you government scum bags to what those in the private sector face anytime you scum screw up the economy and there are layoffs due to lack of business.
On what universe does it make sense to steal even more money from us to give to parasites and leeches?
This isn’t news. Anybody that has been through this crap knows full well everybody is getting a check at the end of it.
Me personally, I’m a private citizen. No work, No Pay.
PAID VACATION!
Wow!
Such High Stakes Negotiating!!!
We already knew this was going to happen and none of us really care.
I agree with every word you posted.
Since you and I can do nothing about this, at least look at the bright side. It isn’t going to win Obama any points, if anything, it’s going to make people more disgusted with Big Government.
If I were an “essential” gov worker, I’d be pissed, having to work for my pay while coworkers were on paid vacation.
This was even debated? It’s a given.
Wasn’t sure there an article a few days ago about fed employees signing up for unemployment due to the shutdown? Wouldn’t that be considered fraud if they get both payments?
..........my son got laid off the other day. They paid him up until the hour they gave him his notice!
I agree with everything you said!
None.

Seems to me like a good time to require that the employees use any accumulated vacation days first so that if/when they return they aren’t off any more for the rest of the year.
Also seems to me like a whole lot of Federal employees owe the government for unpaid taxes. Anyone who does owe should have their back wages sent to the IRS to pay off that bill first. Then if there is any money left over it could go to the employees.
No one - not even Federal employees - deserve something for nothing, particularly when they are using my tax dollars to pay for it.
I'm sure the catch-up check will be handled like any other payroll check and taxes withheld.
