A Jump in C-Spans Ratings, a big jump during Sen Cruz speech
The New York Times ^ | 10/6/2013 | Brian Setzer

Given the meager approval ratings the public has consistently given Congress, it might seem surprising that anyone watches the unblinking live shots of the Senate and House on television. But government crises apparently have a way of ratcheting up interest in Washington procedural drama.

When Senator Ted Cruz, Republican of Texas, started a marathon speech to protest President Obama’s health care law on Sept. 24, the average daily rating for C-Span2, the cable channel devoted to Senate proceedings, increased more than fivefold from the day before, according to data provided to The New York Times by Rentrak. As Mr. Cruz kept talking into the next morning, C-Span2 fans kept watching; in fact, the average rating rose a bit higher on Sept. 25, before returning to more normal levels one day later.

C-Span does not receive ratings from the industry standard-bearer, Nielsen, so Capitol Hill press secretaries and callers to “Washington Journal” have had to guess about how many people watch the suite of noncommercial channels. But C-Span, which televises the House, and C-Span2 have a small, dedicated following, according to Rentrak, a Nielsen competitor.

I am very glad that Sen. Cruz had a wide audience for his speech. I hope people take to heart what he had to say.

I think Sen. Cruz should have yielded when he had read the entire ACA into the congressional record. That would take about 2 months....

Of course, it just might be step one: identify.

Isolate, ridicule and demonize come next.

It was like in the early 1960s (before time limits) baseball games could go to the early hrs of the morning and neither team could break the tie. I remember the ratings going up, way up, as the game kept going.

Ted Cruz's folksy history lesson was like that. I could not turn it off. He just kept getting better and more interesting as he went on.

Obama should try that for 21 hours without a teleprompter. Put up or shut up.

This was the first time in history that I saw people describe CSPAN as “riveting” television LOL

Oh yes I agree with you but he’d have to sleep and eat and do other personal things.

He’d have to get a tag team of several people.

TRUE Patriots are looking for principled leaders with courage to shake things up in that morally/financially bankrupt cesspool called...Washington D.C.

Unfortunately TRUE Patriots are on a fast track to minority status in modern day(gimme gimme)Gomorica.

Have to estimate the numbers.

About 100 thousand average viewers- guess that would mean 300,000 watched some of Ted’s tour de force.

I stayed up most of the night watching, so grateful that we bave someone like Ted Cruz, a real live America-loving politician. So refreshing.

I watched it on my iPad, via a link from Drudge. I wonder if that would show up in the ratings, or was it for TVs only?

I think if they add computers it could be higher.

I did too. The last real politicians I truly believed in were in the late 80s. I was even active in local politics then

Yes, I was up all night with Sen Cruz, riveted. But I felt like Snoopy doing his happy dance, or a child on Christmas morning who still believes in Santa Claus.

are the cspan anchors all libs? I used to watch cspan all the time and from what i’ve seen cspan anchors were pretty good at neutrality. This is how journalist should behave imho
