If The GOP Forces The US To Default, Obama Should Raise The Debt Ceiling Himself
Business Insider ^ | 10-7-13 | Henry Blodget

Posted on 10/07/2013 7:37:07 AM PDT by sheikdetailfeather

As many observers have noted, the dysfunction in Washington is on the verge of becoming a full-blown crisis.

A handful of extremists in one political party have become so convinced of their own brilliance and rectitude — and so frustrated by their inability to persuade the rest of the country of it — that they are threatening to cause the United States of America to default if their demands aren't meant.

This is extortion, plain and simple.

And the Obama Administration is right not to give into it.

If it becomes legitimate for a small group of politicians on either side to threaten the country with economic disaster if they aren't bought off with concessions, America will have to deal with this extortion tactic forever.

So it's time to end it once and for all.

If the Republicans seriously want to cause the U.S. to default by not raising the debt ceiling on October 17th, let them.

Let them spend the 10 days between now and then howling and raging about how awful it is that health insurance might soon become more affordable for millions of Americans. Let them roar about how programs like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid are destroying the country, despite the fact that most Americans like them. Let them scream, as they have every day since a Republican President left office, that our debt and deficits will soon obliterate us (never mind that the deficit is shrinking rapidly). And so on.

Henry Blodgett is a lying idiot. Default involves not paying interest on the debt. The USG takes in enough each month to more than meet that obligation. The shutdown does, however, force the president into a situation of deciding on what the spend the rest. It is something he is innately against because he’s a damned Democrat.

I take exception to the term “handful”. A handful could not do this.

Bullcrap! It may be the only way to get these idiots to wake up and do their job. The Dems haven't passed a budget in almost 4 years, but they are required by law to do so. They show a total disregard for the Constitution and the wishes of those who put them in office. I hope the GOP sticks to its guns...for once.

If the president borrows money without the permission of the people through their representatives, then the people are under no obligation to pay it back.

Lenders, beware!

He can’t legally raise the debt ceiling by himself under section 4 of the 14th Amendment because of section 5 of the 14th Amendment. Case Closed.

Mark Levin REVEALS the brazen unconstitutional assault Obama is planning…

http://therightscoop.com/mark-levin-reveals-the-brazen-unconstitutional-assault-obama-is-planning/

Mark Levin explains below that he has figured out why Obama is running around the country talking about ‘default’ in very extreme and radical ways and he believes Obama has revealed these plans to Boehner and McConnell and is using it to twist their arms on Obamacare.
In short, he believes Obama is setting the stage to bypass Congress and unilaterally raise the debt ceiling all by himself. Levin says it would be the worst violation of the Constitution of Obama’s presidency.

This is disturbing to me.

A lot of things that get talked about can be "differences of opinion" -- that stuff is fine. ("We disagree about affirmative action? Sorry to hear that.")
A lot of things that get talked about are simply "mistakes" -- hey, it happens. ("I swear, I'm absolutely sure that Arnold Scwarnegger was Rocky in the first Rocky movie. Really. I'm sure of it.")

And some things are just dishonest.
No reputable pundit can possibly think that default can occur unless Obama makes that choice. It's not the senate. It's not the House. It's not the Republicans. There is no vote. The president makes the call to pay the bills or to not pay the bills. Simple as that.

To imply otherwise is simply to be a low-down dirty liar.

And...? You’re obviously working under the assumption that the US government operates within the confines of the constitution. With the possible exception of the 3rd amendment, fedgov stopped following those rules a long, long time ago.

Is he a liberal? I really can’t tell from this.

This from the guy who was banned from the securities industry for publishing reports about stocks he was following that were in contrast to his holdings - or to be short, a fraud.

Entitled to his opinion, but previous misgivings make him an ignore. Moving on........

When you have to set up your own argument, by intentionally misstating your oponents argument, then you don’t have an argument.

Just to touch on a couple of this guy’s points.

1. Insurance rates are skyrocketing under Obamacare in all states buy NY, which already had most of the onerous Obamacare rules in effect.

2. Ted Cruz isn’t trying to convince the American public of the Folly of Obamacare, the 2010 congress was elected in large part because the majority of Americans understand the law is a disaster. The 2012 congress was reelected with promises to try and repeal it.

3. The Republicans haven’t linked funding to any othe program to a repeal or delay of Obamacare. Indeed, they keep sending over bills to fund every other aspect of government at the current bloated levels. It is the Democrats that are refusing to allow those bills go through unless they get full obamacare funding. The only ones holding the government hostage are the Democrats.

4. Raising the Debt ceiling will no way cause a default, unless the President and Congress refuse to pay those obilgations first, and then cut other spending to stay withing the ceiling. There is more than enough money coming into the treasury each month to pay the interest on the debt and fund other parts of government providing we would reduce the fundings to the level it was at when Obama took office.
