House GOP Plan Would Keep Government Shut, Raise Debt Limit

Updated 10:49 a.m. | House Republicans are discussing a plan that would include a six-week debt limit increase without reopening the government, sources confirmed to CQ Roll Call.

The plan would prompt another showdown with the White House, which has insisted that Republicans agree to reopen the government without partisan riders or concessions before negotiations begin.

Even tea party leader Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., seemed open to the idea. ”Well I think if that gets us to where we need to be, it may be something we need to consider, because the one thing we won’t do is put the full faith and credit of the United States at risk. It’s foolish, and I don’t think that’s going to happen,” she said.

Some conservatives, meanwhile, have continued to push this morning for attaching some GOP demands to even a short-term debt limit increase.

President Barack Obama has indicated he would sign a short-term measure provided it did not have partisan concessions added on.

For the most part an increase in the debt ceiling would seem to be of minimal consequence in light of the quasi-shutdowns and the absence of approved appropriations and authorizations for the new fiscal year.

You are correct this is the correct move as Lee & Cruz are saying keep the focus on Obamacare. No CR without damage to the Obamacare roll out.

The debt ceiling played to the narrative of ‘radical, terrorist’ Tea Party. this removes this issue and focuses on Obama/Reid irresponsible inflexible behavior.

The debt ceiling deal has the unfortunate appearance of once again kicking the can down the road, but it does offer the advantage of re-focusing attention back to Obamacare where Democrats seem to be losing ground due to all the bad publicity surrouding it. I hope the Pubbies know what they’re doing and have a good strategy.

sadly, a republican win now depends on Zerobama to arrogantly refuse the RINOs surrender, and demand more.

This move by Boehner/Cantor deserves the praise and support of all House GOP members:

1. It insulates GOP from being accused of wanting a default
2. It does NOT re-open the government
3. There will be sufficient policy riders in the final DL - whether it is dealing with Obamacare, Keystone pipeline etc
4. Gets miles ahead of Reid and the Senate RATS on who REALLY wants a default - whichever body passes a DL extension first will have the higher moral posture; Reid is constrained by Senate rules; Boehner is not.
5. Reinforces improved public image that GOP is being the adult, the reasonable player
7. It is already infuriating Obama and his handmaidens.
8. It is forcing the Administration into escalating their already ridiculous, hyperbolic rhetoric — now trying to turn this into a “birther” issue

It's disappointing, but I don't think so many on this site are tactically challenged as much as it is obviously the life goal of some to make sure they have the most hateful snarky posts against the GOPe each and every day, so they launch at every misleading or incomplete headline in this pursuit - without stopping to think. I don't understand this, as it doesnt' exactly require a newsflash or a genius to figure out that the GOPe has been a big problem.

And yet, each day, some Freepers act like they're on the cutting edge by pointing this out - even when the story they glom onto is actually good news. This is actually brilliant by Boehner - but sadly, he watered it down with some of his typical inside the beltway "I'm sure Obama wants...blahblah blah" - but other than the wimpy language, its very smart strategy.

Six more weeks of debt limit changes nothing....takes Obama's issue away - while a year of Obama Care funding means everything.

I have to say that trying to defund obamacare but not being successful put’s the monster squarely on the democrats. The republicans can point out they all voted against it and tried to defund it. They even tried to delay it. Then when it all crashes, and it will, the republicans won’t be blamed.
