White House: Obama would 'likely' sign six week debt ceiling hike

But the White House spokesman reiterated the president will not offer concessions "in return for Congress doing its job."

President Obama "would likely sign" a clean bill that raised the debt ceiling for six weeks, White House press secretary Jay Carney said.

But the White House reiterated that the president was not going to offer concessions "in return for Congress doing its job," further indication that Obama would not negotiate on the budget until the government was reopened.

Carney said it would be "unsustainably bad" policy to allow allow Republicans to use the shutdown as "leverage" to extract concessions, chiding GOP leaders for "punishing the American people."

"Republicans would think we can resolve all of our significant differences over the budget, and while we work that out, we should do sustained harm to the American people?" Carney said.

According to Rasmussen, 82 percent of Democrats want to end the shutdown by maintaining spending for the Affordable Care Act at the current levels, while 71 percent of Republicans would prefer to keep the shutdown going until the law is defunded.”

Tell him he needs to sign he before he reads it and put the changes to Obamacare in there.

He and Nancy Pelosi should be happy doing that based on past behavior, right?

Why isn’t Obumbles doing HIS job, with no help for more unemployed people than ever before? Where was he on September 11, 2012 when the embassy in Benghazi was under attack for over seven hours and four Americans, including an ambassador, were being murdered? Why has he spent more time golfing than taking care of business?

ObamaCare is very likely the death of the U.S. Middle Class, the foundation on which our nation is built. Why do Republicans want to be accomplices to this outrageous crime?

“....Boehner said the ending of the shutdown would depend on how the president responded.

“That’s the conversation we’re going to have with the president today,” he said.

The Speaker acknowledged that the fiscal crisis that has gripped the capital could come back if no agreement is reached by Nov. 22, the date that Republicans would set as the new debt-limit deadline.

“Clearly, you could end up back in the same place, and we don’t want to be here,” Boehner said.

The House hopes to move quickly on the plan, but a vote would not occur before the White House meeting, scheduled for 4:30 p.m., aides said.....”

Forgive my ignorance at this new math, but what does $17,000,000,000,000 + 6 weeks equal?

Sounds like Barry isn’t taking this seriously. Leave it shut down until obamacare is defunded. Forever.

Call me obtuse, but how the heck do you temporarily raise the debt ceiling? At the end of 6 weeks, does the debt ceiling lower again? And how would that work when we've already exceeded the current limit?

I'm getting a headache.

I've never been accused of being the brightest bulb in the package, but some things just seem so obvious.

Why not keep the debt ceiling exactly where it is and cut 10% across the board from every agency, every bureaucracy, every department in government?

Raise the debt ceiling in return for cuts? I don't get it. Promise to cut, then march right on through the next 1.7 trillion? So, even with the cuts, we will need to raise the debt ceiling yet again once we reach 18 to 19 trillion?

How’z this cutting anything?

They could just freeze spending at last years levels and in 10 years we’d be talking about all the surplus dollars.

That's because once signed, it's written in stone, as far as the Dems are concerned. After the 6 weeks, they, along with their media, will be pushing for a permanent rise, saying "we" can't go back!!

In six weeks, 0 will forget it was his idea, and re-bash Republicans for perpetuating short-term crises. The Grand Bargain will probably come sight-unseen, Christmas Eve, passing by one vote.

Ryan OKs forming budget conference "..........................Ryan’s office said that merely convening a conference or agreeing on a budget would not be enough to reopen the government or raise the debt ceiling, however.

"A budget resolution doesn’t have the force of law. So passing a budget resolution wouldn’t reopen the federal government. And it wouldn’t raise the debt ceiling, either. To open the government, pay our bills today, and make sure we can pay our bills tomorrow, we will need to do a lot more,” House Budget spokesman William Allison said.

A leading Democrat slammed a budget conference under the threat of a continued shutdown and debt ceiling default.

“What we don’t understand, and what Republicans have not made clear, is why you have to keep the government shutdown while you are having a conversation. We’ve been trying to have that conversation since last March,” Budget ranking member Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) said.

A spring budget conference is supposed to work out a blueprint in order for 12 annual appropriations bills to be enacted by Sept. 30, 2014......."

Ha haaaaa!!!

First a six week extension and then another six week extension and then another and another.

What are the odds Republicans like Boehner and Ryan will fall for this?

Yeah. I thought the same thing. Even money.

Because that means cutting approximately 10% or so from every SS check. Maybe that's what should be done, but you have to see if the public would stand for it in their long term best interest. Remember 80% of the budget is not discretionary--it's built into law; also, most of our expenditures are transfer payments.
