Jen Senko is a filmmaker who watched in horror as her father slowly came to believe the extreme right-wing lies of Rush Limbaugh and other conservative media mavens. Now she’s making a documentary about it calledThe Brainwashing of My Dad.
Senko’s first documentary, Road Map Warrior Women, won recognition with several festival awards. Her most recent film,The Vanishing City,co-directed with Fiore DeRosa,exposes the economic policies that have made New York a city for the rich. The Vanishing City won Best Feature Documentary in the Williamsburg International Film Festival,Best Short Documentary in the Harlem International Film Festival,and Honorable Mention in the Los Angeles International Film Festival.
Rory O’Connor,a filmmaker and author whose works include the book,Shock Jocks: Hate Speech and Talk Radio,interviewed Senko about her film.
Rory O’Connor:Tell us about the origins of your film. When did you first notice your dad’s ‘brainwashing,”and when did you determine to make a documentary film about it?
Jen Senko:I remember the first time I really noticed it. My dad picked me up from the bus station when I was visiting from New York. On the way home we passed a Hooters and he started complaining about the “attack” against Hooters by the establishment,and saying how silly it was and how it interfered with our freedom.
He was frighteningly angry—excited,argumentative, belligerent… I didn’t understand why. I tried to change the subject and said something about all the SUVs I was seeing on the road—this was in the ’80s, when they first came out. My dad had always been a “non-waster” and tightwad—anytime he got gas he marked it down in a little book to keep track of how much he was spending—so I thought he would agree. I was flabbergasted when he got even angrier and threatened to pull over and let me hitchhike the rest of the way home.......

Remember when Hillary Clinton got pilloried for blaming a “vast right-wing conspiracy” for the relentless attacks against her husband? Maybe you weren’t around then. Well, she said it. Some thought she’d gone off the deep-end. We all know that “conspiracies” mean that you think that we really didn’t land a man on the moon, or that Bigfoot stalks the North - not that there’s anything wrong with that!
But really, was Hillary right? If you think about it, the country has changed dramatically within the last 30 years. During the 1960s and 70s America was moving in a much more socially minded direction. One could say, “liberal”. Then, slowly the country began to shift. What was once considered “right” is now “center-left”. It can’t be denied that corporations play an ever-increasing role in every facet of our government and the media has been instrumental in this development. We are now so divided that the Left will argue that President Obama is to the right of Reagan while the Right labels him a “Socialist”. Hmm. How did that happen?
This documentary will look at the changes that happened to a dad (and many others) when he changed his media habits. Then we look at how the media itself changed and the effect it had on our country. The media has a powerful influence on the American mind – so much so that one could argue: if you control the Media, you control the American Mind."

The sad part about this is he stopped listening to Rush (if this is the same woman I’ve heard with a similar story) because his daughter’s happiness was more important to him. I believe he is dead now. If anyone has more info, please add it.

I listen to Rush because he gives a differing point of view.
He’ll talk about things like the left-leaning bias in selection of respondents to national surveys.
I could spend hours delving into those details, myself, but why duplicate Rush’s work? He’s skilled at ferreting out facts the MSM doesn’t mention.
I do admit I get mad, when I learn the MSM gives only half of many stories.
But I left the Liberal party on my own, in my pre-Rush days, when I saw Democrats NEEDED the collusion of “journalists” in order to stay in power.

That's my main bone-of-contention -- this is the #1 accusation/smear that they make, and there's NEVER a single documented example.
Differences of OPINION are not 'lies'. Lies are deliberate misrepresentation of fact, or the intentional omission of elements of a story that give a listener or reader a false impression.
I join you in demanding of everyone who throws out the accusation: Name one and cite your supporting evidence!
When you do that, the Left's knee-jerk reaction is to labeled you a "DENIER!" and call for you to be silenced for the good of all.
