Greenpeace drama: Family hopes for return of captain jailed in Russia

Bristol, Rhode Island (CNN) -- The Willcox family has long been accustomed to prolonged absences from their seafaring patriarch.

In fact, run-ins with the law were not unusual, given the fact that Peter Willcox had spent decades working for the environmental activist group Greenpeace, which is well-known for its provocative, headline-grabbing protests.

But no one expected the 60-year-old mariner to end up languishing in a Russian jail in the Arctic, facing up to 15 years in prison on charges of piracy.

"The situation he's in now is just way too extreme," said his wife, Maggy.

She and other members of the Willcox family spoke to CNN in their first media interviews since Russian authorities arrested 30 passengers and crew members aboard the Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise last month.

Dang!

A man’s got to know his limitations.

It is highly unlikely Russia will let him go so easily. He’s been a pain in the backside to them.

They’ve been acting like pirates for decades. Apparently, no one told the Russians that they were just poseurs.

“keelhaul him for piracy”

I always thought pirates got the gibbet.

Paste him with a 58-10 slander of the soviet state.
Ten years and five muzzled, then internal exile
it was good enough for everyone else.

One can only laugh at the liberal mindset that goes
to foreign countries and expects to be treated as
though they were at home.

Hahahahahahahah.

These so called “Greenpeace” terrorists think they should be held to a higher standard should be tried as pirates and terrorists. Let them think about it while they sit in the Gulag.

These foolish “activists” think it will be this way
when Obama takes total control, but they will find
out that he won’t take it from them either.

That sort of protest (like the 60’s and 70’s)
can only happen in a free country.

reminds me of the part in fight club when meatloaf got shot in the head. Norton is yelling at the space monkeys saying “what did you think was going to happen?!?”

I always remember my hippy days and a conversation I
had with a liberal friend. He was going on about how
eventually people his age would control government
and how every thing would be allright, then he said,
“And when the young revolt and try to tell us what to
do.....................boy, will we STEP on them!”

Something I’ve never forgotten.

If the Greanpeacer believes in manmade Global Warming, I hope he stays in the jail for the rest of his life so that he doesn't promote the idea to help in making billions of people suffer.

On the up side, maybe he'll get some of those cool Russian prison tattoos to show off when he gets home.

Not that he's likely to survive long enough to go anyplace...

Their tactics are the same as pirates and not only cost Russia money but also puts sailors in harms way. Good for Russia! Their “moral” feelings don’t triumph the rule of law.

I would much preferred that the Russians had used his group for target practice. Unlike the Japanese and Americans, th Russians fight back.

On September 18, two Greenpeace activists from the Arctic Sunrise attempted to scale an oil rig operated by the Russian energy Gazprom. They were planning to protest against Gazprom's plans to drill for oil in the Arctic Ocean.

LOL...trying to scale a oil rig and they bitch about being considered pirates...

What did they think would happen if they actually got on the oil rig...

Russians throw them a party...?

15 years is about right...about time these ass clowns got their whatfor...
