Seriously, don’t buy him a watch. It’ll get stolen in basic training when he showers, AIT when he showers or anytime, period. He won’t need a watch because if the TI’s see him looking at it, the wrath of God will come down on him. #1. The TI will tell you what time it is (0500 Get your ass up girls!!) ) 0515 Stand in line to get food. 0530 go to PT, etc. #2. He’s gonna lose track of time anyways for at least 12 weeks(Basic, tech and anything else they throw at him). Once he gets paid, lety him get anything he wants, or give him a birthday present. Don’t send him off with any afeter shave or anything he’ll miss. The feral Yut’s is in uniform, too.

When I did basic at Benning they took our watches away and didn't give them back until completion.

Same when I went through Navy basic a decade ago. Actually, we could keep our wristwatches in our locker but we weren't allowed to wear them.

Seems like those bands were issue, or cheaply available,to any troops working on electronics.

Bought mine at the PX. I traded it, and the stemwound GI style watch I bought at the same time, to a FFL trooper in Saudi Arabia in 1991 for a French military compass. Traded that in the 00’s at a gun show for some accessory or other, etc.

Couple years ago I bought another GI-style stemwinder and one of these bands on line. It’s in my BOB.

Get a name brand that’s reliable, waterproof... and cheap. Camo or tan band. Nothing too fancy, no bells and whistles.
It will get lost or broken.
I’d think about getting him a Gerber and maybe a Tom Brown knife.

Good luck.

Yep if the same holds true today once you get your basic training uniform issue everything you brought with you gets shipped home within the first week of basic including all personal items. Besides any time measurement will just make basic seem to last a lot longer LOL.
