A Wife Committed to Cruz’s Ideals, but a Study in Contrasts to Him (So it begins)
The New York Times ^ | October 23, 2013 | Ashley Parker

At first glance, Senator Ted Cruz’s wife, Heidi Nelson Cruz, seems to be just the sort of person the Tea Party supporters who celebrate her husband’s anti-establishment positions love to hate.

A vegetarian with a Harvard M.B.A., Mrs. Cruz is a managing director at Goldman Sachs, one of the Wall Street firms that helped set off the populist rage that ushered Mr. Cruz into the Senate in 2012. She works for Goldman in Houston, where she lives with the couple’s two young children, and as her husband’s fame has increased — depending on the audience, he is among the most pilloried or revered members of the Senate — she has maintained a low profile.

“I think it works really well for our family for us both to have careers, and I know what my commitments are to Goldman,” Mrs. Cruz, 41, said in an interview last week in her husband’s Senate office. “I think it’s also really good for our girls to have me at home with them.”

Yet the fallout from her husband’s role in the Congressional fiscal showdown this month did not spare Mrs. Cruz, one half of what she calls “a great team.” And it was the Democrats who seemed to be making her background an issue.

As her husband helped force a government shutdown over his opposition to President Obama’s health care law and argued that members of Congress and their staffs should be forced to buy insurance without any government contribution, the Democrats sensed an opening.

Senator Richard J. Durbin of Illinois, the Senate’s No. 2 Democrat, tried to push Mr. Cruz into admitting that he was on his wife’s blue-chip Goldman health plan — a sign of hypocrisy, he implied....

He married someone who served in the Bush administration? Yuck. I guess they don’t see eye-to-eye politically.

Ted Cruz

Between 1999 and 2003, Cruz served as the director of the Office of Policy Planning at the Federal Trade Commission, an Associate Deputy Attorney General at the United States Department of Justice, and as Domestic Policy Advisor to U.S. President George W. Bush on the 2000 Bush-Cheney campaign.

Bush Administration

Cruz joined the Bush–Cheney campaign in 1999 as a domestic policy adviser, advising then-Governor George W. Bush on a wide range of policy and legal matters, including civil justice, criminal justice, constitutional law, immigration, and government reform.[39]

Cruz assisted in assembling the Bush legal team, devise strategy, and draft pleadings for filing with the Supreme Court of Florida and U.S. Supreme Court, the specific case being Bush v. Gore, during the 2000 Florida presidential recounts, leading to two successful decisions for the Bush team.[36][41]

After President Bush took office, Cruz served as an associate deputy attorney general in the U.S. Justice Department[1][41] and as the director of policy planning at the U.S. Federal Trade Commission.[1][12][41]

I like the implication that those of us in the Tea Party hate people who are vegitarians. Umm, no. We kinda believe people have the freedom to eat what they wish.

And Durbin, projecting onto Cruz. Like Durbin isn't a putz for getting an Obamacare government payment while the rest of us get to pay one hundred percent.

Are you familiar with the college she attended in California? I am, through living in that area as a child/young teen and also serving with an officer who graduated from there. He was a math genius who was transferred to the USMA as a math professor after he left Korea. It is considered one of the top 10 liberal arts colleges in the United States. She must be at least as smart as her husband, of whom Alan Dershowitz says Cruz “was an outstanding student in my class,” Dershowitz said. “Without a doubt he is among the smartest students I’ve ever had… I’ve had great students but he has to be at the top of anyone’s short list, in terms of raw brain power.”

An endorsement if you are a lib, but a sign you are psycho if you are conservative.

I’ve seen some less than flattering pictures but she seems normal and attractive in the girl-next-door kind of way in most of the photos.

She doesn’t look weird to me. Certainly not like Debbie Whatshername Schultz, or Nancy Pelosi, or most any Democrat woman. I think the family photo of them later in the thread is very nice. I’m glad they are on our side, personally.

I have not and will not vote for his wife... she matters not as long as she makes Ted happy. Ted is the real deal... I never want to hear from his wife on politics... I don’t care!

As is almost every politician above dog catcher, including everyone on Mount Rushmore, don’t you agree? What were FDR, JFK, LBJ, the Bushes, Dan Quayle, Al Gore, both Clintons, BHO, Andrew Jackson, Herbert Hoover and just about everybody else you and I can think of?

Since when do we here at FR not expect the NYT to use THE most unflattering picture they can find?

Ted Cruz’ wife is fabulous.

She is accomplished and in it for the right reasons

The Times investigated her completely and this is all they could find

They are the losers here and tgey know it

I saw a very pretty Mrs. Cruz with her two beautiful daughters in a video of an appearance of Ted Cruz at a rally last month. This is the first I have read of her background and I am impressed with her education and work experience. Both environmentalists and vegetarians are not unique to liberalism. My right wing, conservative, family has always been interested in both and and lean to the vegetarian way of eating, much less meat than we accustomed ourselves to as our finances improved over time. Also we all are interested in and follow vitamin and exercise routines and our health reflects the advantage of being aware of the benefits of nutrition to mind and body. I believe that Ted Cruz has a wife who is up to the very challenging role of supporting him in his efforts to save this Republic which has provided them both with opportunities for the life they are able to enjoy. I wish them both the best of life for themselves and their family.

I don’t care if his wife eats grasshoppers three times a day. If Cruz runs, he will get my vote.
