Oneida Indian officials who oppose the Redskins nickname as a slur will meet with NFL officials next week in New York City, a tribe spokesman said Friday.

The meeting agreed to by NFL officials this month is scheduled for Wednesday in New York City, Oneida Indian Nation spokesman Brett Stagnitti told the Associated Press. ---SNIP--- Halbritter, whose tribe runs a large casino resort in Verona in central New York, says the name is degrading and has devastating effects, especially on younger Indians.

“they are meeting with one tribe? What about all the others?”

No sh!t.

What about the Seminoles, Creeks, Black Feet, Sioux, Cherokee, Comanche, Apache, Mohawk, Kiowa, etc, etc. If they have a majority that say the “Redskins” name is offensive....then off with it. If they don’t, screw the PC crap. I am actually 1/32nd Cherokee per family lore and if it makes any difference to anyone I don’t mind the name at all. But, I am a Cowboys fan, so there is that.

The Oneida? Why not the tribes closer to DC who are likely to be Redskin fans?

Virginia tribes call out Obama on ‘Redskins’ name controversy
Posted on: 8:10 pm, October 14, 2013, by Tracy Sears, updated on: 06:18am, October 15, 2013

RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – Some Virginia Native American Tribes say federal recognition is far more important to them, than worrying about the ongoing controversy surrounding the name “Redskins.”

During an interview earlier this month, even President Obama said he’d think about changing the name if he was the team’s owner.

While the issue has sparked a lot of attention, some Virginia Tribal Chiefs say they have more pressing things to worry about.

Walt “Red Hawk” Brown, chief of Virginia’s Cheroenhaka Nottoway Tribe, says he embraces Native American symbols and words being incorporated into this country’s social fabric and doesn’t find the term “Redskins” offensive.

“It doesn’t refer to me as a native person,” Brown says, “It refers to the players.”

The Cheroenhaka Tribe, derived from the Iroquois Indians, is one of 11 tribes recognized by the Commonwealth of Virginia, however they have never received federal recognition.

“Why would my president say that (Redskins) is offensive to him?” Brown argues. “What’s offensive to me is that we have 11 state recognized tribes and he hasn’t done one thing to get those tribes federally recognized, but the tribes out west are federally recognized. We were the ones who had first ethno-historic contact with the colonials.”

Brown was an outspoken critic in 2007, when the NCAA ruled that The College of William & Mary had to get rid of their logo that included two tribal feathers. The college appealed the decision, but was denied.
(snip)

I hate to break it to the NFL suits, but worry about what the Oneida think about this is like going to see a proctologist for a runny nose? Until the NFL started expanding, the Redskins were the football team of the South.

Nothing against the Oneida Nation, but the opinion of the Tribes from the South are the opinions that matter in this issue. Virginia has 11 recognized tribes and all they can find are the Oneidas?

Talk about racism...are the Oneida inherently smarter than tribes from the South?

And why the hell is anyone worrying about the name of a football team considering everything else going on in this country.

Thanks Kid Shelleen. Without any apparent awareness of irony:

In other news, the Oneida Indian tribe phoned al sharpton and jesse jackson to thank them for showing them how profitable it can be to play the race card in today's America.

“More money that we ever imagined, unlimited media time, and only the innocent white man gets hurt”, an anonymous member of the tribe said.
