Make ’Em Pay (NYT Big Barf)
New York Times ^ | October 28, 2013 | By Timothy Egan

Posted on 10/28/2013 11:42:25 PM PDT by Brad from Tennessee

Where do you go if you’re a “Deadliest Catch” kind of guy, manliest of manly men, but couldn’t fish for king crab because some jelly-bellied Republicans threw a tantrum 5,000 miles away and shut down the government?

What do you do if you’re a farmer in Kansas who could not put winter wheat in the ground or get this year’s cattle vaccine because your government agriculture office was deemed nonessential? Whom do you see about the home loan that was held up, the family restaurant near the federal building that couldn’t meet October’s payroll, the bookings lost at season’s end in dozens of national parks?

Real Americans, the wind-chapped toilers so often invoked by politicians in a phony froth, lost real money from the real pain inflicted on their livelihoods by the extortionists in Congress this month.

How much money? At least $24 billion was the estimate given by Standard & Poor’s. Small business was hit particularly hard. And it’s a rolling pain, affecting consumer confidence, that will be felt through a holiday buying season that can make or break many retailers.

“I am a small businessman in a big ocean with big bills,” said Captain Keith Colburn, an Alaska crab fisherman, in Senate testimony during the shutdown. “I need to go fishing.” But the skipper, who is featured in the reality TV show “Deadliest Catch,” said he was being held back by “a bunch of knuckleheads” who prevented marine regulators from doing their jobs. . .

If published anywhere else this would be mistaken for satire. Egan puts the finishing touch on Obama's Shutdown political theater. Liberals are much better at dealing with manufactured crises--health care, global warming, gender inequality, the Redskins--than with reality. The Shutdown as an economic calamity caused by Tea Party Republicans is the last root they can grasp as they go over the ObamaCare cliff.

if the fedgov is keeping you from fishing in the middle of the Bering Sea, regardless of the fedgov's current funding status, maybe... juuuuust maybe it's a tad too big

it's long passed the time for it to get pared down to size

Well Timothy, where do I go to stop the a-holes in Washington from spending $6 trillion dollars over the last 5 years in my name and my children’s names? In the names of every person in this country? That’s “real money”... You and your kind just keep cinching up the yoke around our necks and expect us to keep on pulling at your every whim. I will not comply. You’re going to find out the hard way that many of us won’t comply.

>> Whom do you see about the home loan that was held up

It was obvious, the home loan regretted showing up for work that day...

>> the family restaurant near the federal building

It was morning. Donuts and coffee were on the menu.

>> Real Americans, the wind-chapped toilers so often invoked by politicians in a phony froth,

It was ugly. The spittle was every where. But with lips cracked deeper than desert clay, no one could deny the relief provided by the unwelcome spray.

The nearest public toilet to NYT?
Does the NYT ever write about women like this?
I mean real women.

Hey, Timmy... after Obama won the shutdown dispute, and got the deal he wanted, - the administration posted a one day increase in the national debt of 338 billion dollars!

Read the comments under the article.

Obama is blameless, which of course means that they think he is powerless. One Junior Senator is responsible for all the problems the shutdown cost.

I wanted to go on there and straighten the idiots out, but I’m not creating a NYT Account. If they used Discus, my alter ego “Antiobamunist” would have a field day.

My handle alone makes them quiver with hate and venom. I love it.

The first place you go is to get the facts right!

The assertion that some jelly-bellied Republicans threw a tantrum 5,000 miles away and shut down the government cannot be supported by facts.

Until four years ago, the government was funded through the appropriations process, called Regular Order (piecemeal). Around a dozen separate appropriations bills, each covering one or two federal agencies, made their way through Congress. Some passed through Congress easily. Others took much longer and witnessed more sustained and impassioned debate, and sometimes a government shutdown, as occurred 7 or 8 times when Tip O'Neil was Speaker of the House of Representatives.

The House is where spending bills originate. The House passed a spending bill to fund the government, especially the agencies that were noncontroversial like the DC government, Dept. Interior, etc.

Reid trashed it and blamed the Republicans for doing their job! Furthermore, he saw to it that our WWII veterans were threatened with arrest because they wanted to visit a monument they paid for.

Get some facts fisherman!

If you need the fedeal government's help to fish, you are not a fisherman.

If you need the federal government's help to plant wheat, you are not a farmer.

What does a hard working man in West Virginia do when the EPA shuts down his job. What does a hard working fisherman do when the Environmentalists refuse to let him fish or the sawmillers do when they cannot cut trees? Lets see how many are out of work while the government is in session and compare it with those out of work when it is shut down.

Uh, Timmy? If you're that kind of guy you put on your big-boy underpants and go fishing.
