Food stamp recipients face a massive benefit cut set to kick in when stimulus funds expire Friday. The nationwide cut “is equivalent to about 16 meals a month for a family of three,” according to a Center on Budget and Policy Priorities analysis using the USDA’s “Thrifty Food Plan.” CBPP called the roughly $5 billion annual cut to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program “unprecedented” in “depth and breadth.” “If you look across the world, riots always begin typically the same way: when people cannot afford to eat food,” Margarette Purvis, the president and CEO of the Food Bank..

Will it keep a starving person alive?

We are no longer in a Cadillac society.

Hard to plant a garden for someone living in a city one room of a tenement with a bathroom down the hall and no access to cooking facilities.

There aren’t any such federally subsidized housing units. The ‘rules’ for those are fairly strict. Probably not state ones either.

Maybe 100 years ago.

Thank you, you are correct. It seems that many on FR have never been to a city. By the way, a porch or balcony is a luxury feature in most big cities.

You are quite wrong. Units like what I describe are all over the five boroughs of New York City.

Federally subsidized section 8 housing units?

Around here ‘just any house or apartment’ isn’t eligible for section 8. There are strict guidelines about the suitable’ness of said housing before the owner will become eligible to receive section 8 vouchers as rent income.

I find it difficult to believe NYC would be so backwards.

There are a whole bunch of stages BEFORE section 8, which takes years to obtain and which by the way is frozen now in NY. Thousands of people are living in SROs and worse. Please don’t be like the Dems who think that all of reality is represented by a newspaper or wikipedia article.

The reason some people don't 'qualify' for food stamps is because they make too much money to qualify.

It's not a question of being old, single, young or whatever... If a person earns enough money to buy their own food, they don't get food stamps.

There was a doctor in my town several years back who made over $200,000 a year but because he spent more than he earned he eventually had to declare bankruptcy.

Do you think he should have been entitled to food stamps and food bank assistance because he was so bad with money? He liked going on fancy trips more than saving... What's your call Patriotic1. Would Jesus want you to step up and enable him?

It sounds like this doctor made some bad choices. The remark about would Jesus want to enable him? I’m sure - at least I would hope - that this man learned a valuable lesson about handling money. Therefore, it never hurts to give someone a helping hand when they are down and out. You never know when you are going to need it. That’s the beautiful thing about sowing and reaping and judging others - when you do - it might just come home to you. So, I think that Jesus would want us to show compassion to someone who has made a mistake - after all - we all make them and will continue to do so. Unless, like some on here - you are perfect.

Most of the people I know who don’t believe in ‘judging others’ apply that concept to drug addicts, lowlifes, robbers, criminals, perverts etc. I’ve NEVER heard one of the ‘don’t judge’ people apply that concept to someone who uses the “N” word, or a Tea Party member, or someone who’s disparaging of gays... Really. My experience is the ‘we don’t judge’ bunch is liberal. And the only thing they don’t judge is themselves and the victim groups that prop them up.

Then maybe you need to broaden your horizons. Just saying when you judge others, gossip and criticize - then it comes home to you. No, it isn’t a liberal concept, but a Biblical one.

This effects my cancer stricken DIL and my grandson. My worthless son won’t find a job, uses his type 2 diabetes which is diet fixable to a big extent, it won’t help the PN that was his fault for ignoring the diabetes warnings. I am tough loving him, NOT ONE RED CENT, he dug this hole, now he can dig his way out. The gov’t won’t cover him any way, he is a White Male in a job that has no hours now, 16 in the past month, and still he sits on his butt not looking for a job, expects his cancer stricken wife to hunt down the charity aid. I wash my hands of him money wise. He still has my heart as he is my son, but I firmly believe a true man supports his family if at all possible! So you have to start at the bottom and work 2 jobs, to replace your cancer stricken wife’s income. DO IT, BE A MAN not a whiny child-man.

I supported by myself 2 kids for a decade. Gave up anything that was not a necessity and used rummage sales to clothe us.

Cry me a river, IF I can do it on just a HS education during the peanut farmer’s administration, he can do it on a come from the bottom to a Supervisor’s position education.

I feel sorry that my really good DIL and grandson have to suffer for the sins of his father and her husband, my failure of a son to be a REAL MAN!

Oh, please! Just what percent of those involved live in such conditions? Probably fewer than 1%. Cry me a freakin’ river. Most of those on food stamps are fat and don’t live in a large city one room apartment.

It's not hard at all.

This tenement of yours is in a city with no vacant lots, no churches, no schools, no parking lots, no roofs?

Poor Americans have become so conditioned to being victims they've forgotten how to be free.
