Millions on food stamps facing benefits cuts
CBS News ^ | October 31, 2013 | By Alain Sherter

It is late October, so Adrianne Flowers is out of money to buy food for her family. That is no surprise. Feeding five kids is expensive, and the roughly $600 in food stamps she gets from the federal government never lasts the whole month. "I'm barely making it," said the 31-year-old Washington, D.C., native and single mother.

Starting Friday, the money is likely to run out even quicker.

That is when Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, benefits are set to fall for more than 47 million lower-income people -- 1 in 7 Americans -- most of whom live in households with children, seniors or people with disabilities. Barring congressional intervention, the maximum payment for a family of four will shrink from $668 a month to $632, or $432 over the course of a year.

The guy isn’t worth it. The babies are worth a LOT.

Having children out of wedlock is a career choice for a certain demographic.

When the youngest turns 18 invariably the mom will find a way to get on disability.

that is the point of sending the snacks home in the backpacks, the parents are trading the food stamps for beer, crack cigarettes and not buying food

I keep telling people, you can’t make others act “right”. You can’t reason with the unreasonable.

the kids know they are not being cared for the way they should be. the kids don’t want to be on free lunch, it is embarrassing. nonetheless, somehow someone has to feed the kids

In most of these schools the kids are ALL on free lunch. There IS no stigma with it.

There are whole generations of inner city kids that think the school feeding them for free, 3 meals a day, is just what happens.

There are a whole bunch of kids who don’t know anyone who does NOT get an EBT allowance every month.

The kids think they are OWED this largesse. Pay UP!

exactly, I live in the heart of it and see it every day.

That or grandma takes on a few of the grand-kids.

There are plenty to go around.

My issue isn’t against those that really need them but those lazy bastards that just want a hand out

I'm just a hard ass I suppose because no where in the constitution can I find where I'm obligated to provide for anybody elses "needs".

My moral obligation to help the poor is a private matter, without government involvement. How much more could I do, on my own, if gov didn't rob me to provide for those whom they consider "needy"?

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program

SUPPLEMENTAL SUPPLEMENTAL SUPPLEMENTAL SUPPLEMENTAL

you are wrong about the no stigma

the kids do NOT want to be on free lunch but to the parents it is all about the money

I know of people making 40K who kept their kids on free lunch

I asked her why was her kid on free lunch?

One would think that the government’s token requirement to provide social security numbers for dependents would be a tool to use to combat such fraud.

However, the government willing doesn’t cross-check such things as the same SSN, fake SSNs, etc when using them for justification for entitlements. They only use that requirement to make honest and decent hardworking people jump through more hoops to obtain rightful exemptions.

This Obama government is fully invested in redistributing as much wealth away from producers to worthless (yet voting) consumers. They intentionally brainwash and under educated their children so that they will grow up to be entitled sloths just like their momma, regardless of who baby-daddy is.

Just once - ONCE - I’d like to see one of these stupid reporters ask these hard luck food stamp recipients if their kids get free lunch at school. And then ask them about breakfast. And then report it. How many meals do this lady’s kids actually eat at home?

You aren’t familiar with the demographic then.

You’re thinking of white kids in suburbia.

In the inner city there is NO stigma for free lunch.

What’s she doing with all the money?

The picture in the article shows a smart phone on the table along with bottled water with liquor bottles on the mantle piece behind them.

5 kids and no mention of “Dad”.

Man, that's what I was going to say. How about Annie keep her legs closed until she has the means to take care of her own offspring? And in the meantime, maybe she could get a paper route or something...

You wouldn't have to, there would be very few needy in that scenario. The only reason there are so many is their behavior is subsidized by the government, if it wasn't they would make different choices.

This article shows what BS this whole food stamp thing is....

$600 a month goes to feed herself 3 meals a day, and her kids 1 meal a day, and 3 meals on the weekends. They ALREADY get free breakfast and lunch at school.

If you can’t feed yourself and 5 kids this many meals a month on $600, you are pitiful.

Beans. Rice. Canned or frozen veggies. Milk. That’s all they need but noooo this is a marketing ploy by the commies. The music may soon stop.

In most of these schools the kids are ALL on free lunch.

$$$$$

This is the latest trend in sucking in the middle class. A new public school near me that has a few students from ‘poor’ families, provides free breakfast and lunch to the entire student body, “so that the poor children will not be stigmatized.” Most of the kids are from upper middle class families in upscale neighborhoods. Even if their mothers feed them breakfast before they leave home, they are taken to the cafeteria and fed again.

This kind of expense is an example of how ‘budgets’ keep going up at record rates. And bureaucrats keep expanding their fiefdoms.
