School principals concerned about social media site Ask.fm

Just when you thought you had a handle on your kid's Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts comes another social media site that's causing serious concerns.

Ask.fm is the latest to capture the fleeting attention spans of teens and tweens. Users post questions about themselves or others and wait for responses. What makes this site different, though, is the lack of privacy controls, and the fact that those instant responses can be completely anonymous.

A quick scan of the site shows everything from insults over body image, to posts encouraging suicide. Ask.fm has about 65 million users, many of them children. Analysts believe kids have moved to the site because so many parents police their more mainstream accounts.

NBC covered this a little bit this morning. Parents of kids, be aware.

“Analysts believe kids have moved to the site because so many parents police their more mainstream accounts.”

I wonder how much these brilliant analysts get paid for revelations of this nature.

I’m stuck on the first sentence.

What parent has a handle on their kid’s social media activity.

No child, who is not old enough to drink, or smoke or drive, or who is not old enough to do anything potentially dangerous, which social media is, should have access to social media.

And that’s it.

Worked for us.

The late teens around her, who now have full access and decision making capabilities thank me often for not giving in on that fight.

It’s impossible to control children’s access to these sites unless they homeschool, which I did. We had one computer, and it was in the living room where I could see it. Now it’s harder, though, for parents. What child doesn’t have a phone that can access the internet? They don’t make them that “dumb” anymore.

Sounds like secular society has succeeded in driving a wedge between parents and their children.

Leftists - you work for Satan. Own it.

There is this really cool feature on electronic gadgets, it is called an ON/OFF switch. I wish more parents in this country would be parents, and parent their children.

I don't need to, (because I monitor my children activities, and they know it) but it is very easy to turn off the wifi in the house so they have no access to it. I pay the phone bill so I also know what calls/texts are going out. You don't want your kid on the internet, don't give them access to it. You don't want your kids on social media sites, don't buy them a iPad/Kindel/etc.. so they can. I am so tired of parents not being parents and then wanting "someone" to fix it, regulate it, BAN something, they don't like or really care about.

/rant off

Mine do!

Like you we homeschool our kids so we do have control over what they are doing. I don't know very many 12 and 13 year olds with a job that pays enough to afford a smart phone.

They do; my phone can't access the Internet and only cost me $15 hard earned dollars. It makes calls and that's it, just like Alexander Graham Bell wanted.

My sons do not have cellphones. Our only computer is a laptop in the kitchen, which is openly visible to everyone. Neither of them are on social media and, to be honest, neither seem to be interested. Their iPods are regulated and I even do surprise checks to see what they’re up to...which is usually games and fun science apps. They know my husband and I have all rights to their lives lol.

I've been saying for more than a decade, that kids don't belong on the internet, period.

That would be any child we had. Yes they make dumb phones. My wife and I both have one. Makes and receives calls and text messages. NO camera, No internet, NO anything else.

They tried to get mine on at the military base school in kindergarten. It was a sign of bad practices and she was out of there in three days after a few other things.

They wanted me to sign a waiver incase she came across pornography or other disturbing images. NO.

Oh, nothing will happen, just sign it. Well if nothing will happen I don’t need to sign it. Beside the FACT that KGers don’t need to be on the internet.

Parents, mothers are SHEEP.

Then, we shared the internet starting in 5th g or so, for school, and it was in the LR.

WE got our own laptops with WIFI in high school, after they can discern what is good for them and what is not, to a point. Middle scholars are much worse than DGers at that, BTW, so it’s a bad idea for them to have that addiction (internet) before they get to middle school That’s when things get really bad.

Now we have every gadget known. They are tools. they get too much attention at times, of course, but nothing weird happens.

I know by now when something disturbing happened to them during the day, and eventually I can get the truth out of them, and they feel better getting it off their chest. If that’s allowed to fester in elementary school, then no one can know when they are disturbed in Middle school At that point the whole existence is disturbed.

the internet is unnecessary for kids and it is disturbing to them, guaranteed, at one point or another.

Fight it like Ted Cruz on the Senate floor.

Honest, mine thank me that I spared them what they see many of their formerly wonderful and wise, but now disturbed and troubled peers are going through.

If you don’t talk much just top up the minutes every 3 months to keep it working; very cost effective.
