MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- A satellite about the size of a Volkswagen van is on its way back down to Earth. The over one ton satellite is expected to crash land sometime Sunday night or Monday morning. But at this point, it's not clear where.

The night that the debris fell to earth, we had Skylab "parties" which offered up an excuse to get completely wasted on margaritas and pina coladas by the pool. I was only 17 years old then but being that it might be my last night on earth, my parents allowed me to partake - and I did!
People were walking around with special Skylab T-shirts that had a target on the back of them. Disco was big back then so we were listening to "Ring My Bell", "Bad Girls" and "We Are Family" at full volume. It was crazy! The Knack was just starting to get popular with "My Sharona" but it was only just cracking the charts when Skylab fell so disco was still at peak fever.
Ironically, the photo below of the Holiday Inn Restaurant (remember them?) Skylab party featured a Volkswagon - which is the size of the satellite about to strike us shortly.

I’m glad the Disco craze went the way of Skylab.
They used that size comparison because the satellite has Deadhead stickers on it.

You had to be there. Disco was huge in my high school. Boys wore platform shoes to school and silk shirts unbuttoned to our navels with gold chains. The pants were made out of some sort of polyester and they really itched badly. Plus they were super tight which is how we were expected to dress back then. Not to mention our long, blow-dried hair, which made us all look like girls from the rear. As a result, nobody who went to high school during that era retained any photos from that time and we all tossed our high school yearbooks into the nearest landfill. Anyway, another nugget from the Skylab re-entry - some newspaper on the West Coast offered a $10,000 prize for the first person to show up at their office with Spacelab debris. However, you had 72 hours from landfall to get it there.
So some 17-year-old kid from Australia ended up winning the prize (I think he was related to Olivia Newton-John) by hopping on a plane without a suitcase or a passport (you could do that in those days) and walked away with ten large.
That’s odd. I’ve had the page open continuously for a while and it suddently started reporting that the altitude was increasing. Then I saw your post, reloaded the page, and now there’s no detail.
I was there. I graduated in 77. You are right about the pictures in the landfill. LOL
LOL One of my greatest fears is that a picture of me will surface one day of me wearing bell-bottom pants and the whole bit.

I’ve got it back up and it’s at -57 degrees latitude, over the Pacific Ocean headed towards Antarctica, and altitude is increasing.
The whole thing seems messed up.
Some of these are in an elliptical orbit.
Good point... I’d forgotten about that possibility.
