What I saw at the doomsday prepper convention
CNN Money ^ | 11/11/13 | David Z. Morris

More and more Americans are spending money to get ready for an uncertain future -- gathering food, water, tools, and skills to help them weather anything from a hurricane to a pandemic. Contrary to images of deluded or gun-obsessed "lone wolves," many preppers are average consumers reacting to concrete worries, and their way of thinking is spreading, fueling an emerging lifestyle trend. That lifestyle is generating demand for a broad spectrum of products offering survival -- or even comfort -- when large-scale systems go down.

if you could only explain why there are more than a few 'Conservatives' (even here on FR) that have a detest preppers with the same hatred and vitriol as the the most Government loving red diaper doper baby you would have answered the $64,000.00 question.

I may have an answer, don't know if it's the right one...

They hated Noah, and they hate Christians, for the same reason. In preparing our "lifeboat" to save us from destruction, we have condemned the rest, inherently, by our actions. I believe you'll see that the conservatives and liberals who hate preppers also share in common a rebellion to Christ.

By his speech and actions, which demonstrated his faith, Noah condemned the world of that time.—Hebrews 11:7

Only with the people after the Depression kids did the HABIT of not keeping things ‘back’ take flight.

About 30 years ago I built a pantry that holds 2-3 months worth of food. We always restock what we eat. It was only about 5 years ago when we decided to think longer term.

My point is just about anyone can accumulate a couple of months worth of food that they eat and keep restocking. The trick is do not rob your pantry to have cash for other things.

When the winter storms move in, there is nothing warmer than a nice fire and a well stocked pantry.

She literally said if YOU saved yourself, it was not fair to all those who did not prepare.

She is correct. It is not fair.

But, whoever told her that life is...or is supposed to be...fair?

I can’t believe anyone with a brain would support the Boston debacle. Myself, I live in northern Alberta, and I need to do more to prepare

What are the Christmas lights for?

Emergency lighting that likely runs on 12v.

At least let me stay a night if I’m wandering through? I’m up in northen Alberta though, plenty of game and fresh water, doubt I’ll go far. I will help and protect those that need protection though.

I think it is fair, actually.

Those who took the time, expense and effort to prepare deserve to be better off than those who did not.

If it's fair, based on what you did to prepare, then that's basically unfair! /s

I don't know about you guys, but I think I found the "almost" perfect bug-out vehicle:

Those crazy Russians have refurbished old BTR amphibious personnel carriers!

They must have stored their food and water in the other half of the bunker?

Under the floor, batteries are down there too.

Absolutely. We have frequent electrical outages, tornado, and snowstorms, so we have always kept a well stocked pantry. About 5 years ago, when the oil prices spiked is when we went longer term.

I knew that inflation would hit the groceries pretty quickly, so I stocked up on all the regular stuff we used. It depended on the use by date and how much we generally used as to how much I bought. Some stuff was a year, some was more.

When the streets are icy and dangerous it’s great to snuggle up with something hot to drink, and know that we don’t have to go out till the roads are clear, and the weather is warmer.
