Federal authorities are investigating three senior Navy intelligence officials as part of a probe into an alleged contracting scheme that charged the military $1.6 million for homemade firearm silencers that cost only $8,000 to manufacture, court records show.

The three civilian officials, who oversee highly classified programs, arranged for a hot-rod auto mechanic in California to build a specially ordered batch of unmarked and untraceable rifle silencers and sell them to the Navy at more than 200 times what they cost to manufacture, according to court documents filed by federal prosecutors

The purpose of the silencers remains a mystery. According to the court papers, one of the intelligence officials told a witness in the case that the silencers were intended for SEAL Team 6 , the elite commando unit that killed Osama bin Laden.

The case is the second contract-fraud investigation to entangle senior Navy intelligence officials in recent weeks.

On Friday, the Navy disclosed that Vice Adm. Ted “Twig” Branch, the director of naval intelligence, and Rear Adm. Bruce F. Loveless, the director of intelligence operations, are under investigation as part of an unrelated bribery scandal involving Glenn Defense Marine Asia , a Singapore-based defense contractor.

That these were built by an auto mechanic or were homemade are both completely irrelevant. How much they cost to make is only relevant if this was a no-bid contract or sold on cost-plus terms.

Bribery, kickbacks, fraud and such are what is relevant. These are the things this administration has been doing with billions of tax dollars since day “won”.

I’d be inclined to take it the other way. All his ranting and raving is meant to be seen for what it is. And it certainly doesn’t lead to a successful business with many sales.

My favorite Calvin and Hobbes cartoon! Another is when Calvin’s dad convinced him everything before 1940 was all black and white.

I’ve got the Complete set of these cartoons, and when the artist quit drawing them I quit reading the comic pages.

The Chicagoization and Detroitification of America are making measurable progress in the Navy.

In all reality suppressors are cheap to produce a metal tube and a few baffles.

It is only the insane regulation in this country that cause such high prices.

Manufactures always inflate the retail the retail price.

If they get some party to buy them at that price they make more money.

The government got what they paid for so what.

If they didn't want to pay that they should have had a bunch of machinist mates turn them out for 8000.00 they are easy to make.

The fact that this can happen only shows how the laws artificially inflate the prices of these items, items which should be standard for hearing protection.

Doesn’t the govt care about kids who shoot?

Yeah, what the hell - let's get on the taxpayer gravy train. Kind of like when we were paying $60 a pop for "portable, hand-held, communications devices" otherwise known as #2 pencils.
