Big game backlash: Protests against celebrity hunter Melissa Bachman mount

More than 250,000 people have signed an online petition demanding that South Africa deny future entry to Melissa Bachman, a big game hunter whose smiling photo with a dead lion has sparked considerable outrage.

The petition, launched by Cape Town resident Elan Burman, includes a letter addressed to Director General Mkuseli Apleni and other South African officials.

"She is an absolute contradiction to the culture of conservation this country prides itself on," Burman wrote. "Her latest Facebook post features her with a lion she has just executed and murdered in our country. As taxpayers we demand she no longer be granted access to this country and its natural resources."

According to Change.org, Burman's petition has 257,753 supporters. A Facebook group called "Stop Melissa Bachman" has more than 148,000 "likes."

"Stop the murder of wildlife for the sport," a message on the group's Facebook page reads. "Stop Melissa Bachman and people like her from pulling the trigger.

"An incredible day hunting in South Africa!" Bachman, a Minnesota native, wrote on Facebook and Twitter Nov. 1. "Stalked inside 60 yards on this beautiful male lion ... what a hunt!"

Big game hunting in Africa has long been criticized by animal rights activists, but proponents say the money hunters spend during their trips boosts the local economy, and supports conservation projects.

According to Grind TV, Bachman killed the lion during a guided hunt facilitated by the Maroi Conservancy. And according to Maroi, the hunt was perfectly legal.

“We do ethical hunting and all meat from animals hunted is distributed to the local community," a post on Maroi's Facebook page reads. "Funds generated from hunting goes towards fixing the border fence that was washed away in the 2013 floods, combating poaching, which is excessive in this area due to close proximity to Zimbabwe,

“You also have no idea that elephants would be all but extinct in the wild except for hunters.”

I have no dog in this fight but I’m curious-——what was done?

It (Conservation) has paid for a lot of habitat that would have otherwise been turned into a parking lot.

I mostly agree with you on that statement but do you really believe that is what is going to happen in South Africa?

That's harder to believe than "If you like your insurance, you can keep it".

Provided she didn’t shoot me, she could hunt me. I wouldn’t run very fast.

I sent more than a quarter million hogs off to the slaughter house. Where does that put me on the jerk scale?

That makes you the porcine Stalin.

But I still like you.

Hey, I know it's the current style, but could you make the pigs a little less lean? The bacon is starting to suffer.

I am generalizing a bit and not referring to any particular continent or region. Fees from licenses, going to habitat, is an important aspect in the equation which hunters are well aware of. I also believe it is helping man be good stewards of this planet.

Too bad that big boy can no longer pass down those magnificent genes.

At his size and age, I'm sure he's passed on plenty of his DNA.

Now, I'm more concerned about Ms. Bachman passing on her DNA.

If you drink a cup of tea you are responsible for the deaths of thousands of God’s creations.

If big male lions like this were as plentiful as white-tails, I'd say harvest all you want.

But we know that is not the case.

there is an alligator too!

Seems there's always some sharp teeth or claws somewhere in the picture when you're hunting the gamest of game.

All animals die.

You would prefer that the lion died in agony, over a long period by natural causes. That is the way most top level predators die. It is much worse than being killed by a modern hunter.

Or, perhaps you would prefer that they not exist at all? That is what will happen when you take away the fees for hunting that are the way these reserves are maintained.

I suspect that you are just do not understand the reality of the situation

“agreed, she is a jerk, as are all other big game trophy hunters. Kill to eat (deer, elk), ok. Kill a wild animal to show off (bear, elephant, big cats) sucks.”

All the meat is eaten (in Africa) in either case. It makes no difference to the animal. Of course, if you let the poor African kill the Lion for the meat, no money goes to maintain the reserve, and there are no more lions.

Is that what you want?

“Check out the pink bow in post #18.”

Pretty - I’d use it for zombies but I wouldn’t kill an African wild animal unless it was about to eat me. I don’t care for this Bachman person - actually, I’d rather seen the lion track her.

I was getting your point but lost it with the comment about getting kicks over killing ‘one of God’s creations’. Having served in WWII and with a brother killed in that war many of God’s creations get killed everyday in many different ways at many different times so whose choices are more God likened than others?

“I love my sausage, bacon and smoked pork products.”

We raise animals for food but I don’t put a lion in that group. If they actually needed to thin lions, well okay but I could not do it or watch it happen.

“I don’t care for this Bachman person - actually, I’d rather seen the lion track her.”

Why? You seem to be a reasonable and logical person. What is your logic here?

I suspect that it is based on false information that you have been fed by the MSM or other source. Plenty of false information out there. I have been tricked many a time.
