Big game backlash: Protests against celebrity hunter Melissa Bachman mount

More than 250,000 people have signed an online petition demanding that South Africa deny future entry to Melissa Bachman, a big game hunter whose smiling photo with a dead lion has sparked considerable outrage.

The petition, launched by Cape Town resident Elan Burman, includes a letter addressed to Director General Mkuseli Apleni and other South African officials.

"She is an absolute contradiction to the culture of conservation this country prides itself on," Burman wrote. "Her latest Facebook post features her with a lion she has just executed and murdered in our country. As taxpayers we demand she no longer be granted access to this country and its natural resources."

According to Change.org, Burman's petition has 257,753 supporters. A Facebook group called "Stop Melissa Bachman" has more than 148,000 "likes."

"Stop the murder of wildlife for the sport," a message on the group's Facebook page reads. "Stop Melissa Bachman and people like her from pulling the trigger.

"An incredible day hunting in South Africa!" Bachman, a Minnesota native, wrote on Facebook and Twitter Nov. 1. "Stalked inside 60 yards on this beautiful male lion ... what a hunt!"

Big game hunting in Africa has long been criticized by animal rights activists, but proponents say the money hunters spend during their trips boosts the local economy, and supports conservation projects.

According to Grind TV, Bachman killed the lion during a guided hunt facilitated by the Maroi Conservancy. And according to Maroi, the hunt was perfectly legal.

“We do ethical hunting and all meat from animals hunted is distributed to the local community," a post on Maroi's Facebook page reads. "Funds generated from hunting goes towards fixing the border fence that was washed away in the 2013 floods, combating poaching, which is excessive in this area due to close proximity to Zimbabwe,

Those 250,000 people had better not come to my house. They would be so offended that would probably wet themselves!

Just another jerk who gets their kicks by killing one of God’s creations.

You are a hypocrite and a moron. I'm ranch raised and still kill and process all my own beef, pork, and chickens. I know exactly where meat comes from including the meat that the PC hypocrites and morons eat. They just want to ignore that what they eat was also alive at one time. They just do not have the balls to kill it themselves.

I'm also an avid archery hunter and yes I do harvest wild game/meat every year. The wild game is all fair chase hunts. That meat is different from meat the morons and hypocrites eat. Their meat is pushed down a narrow passageway into a slaughter house with no chance of escape.

Bull cookies. The absolute contradiction to South Africa's culture of conservation is it's pride in killing white farmers and their families. Over 3000 white farmers have been murdered there since 1994.

I sent more than a quarter million hogs off to the slaughter house. Where does that put me on the jerk scale?

Oh boy...

You have no idea how conservation works. You have no idea how much hunters, here and abroad, contribute to the conservation of wildlife and their habitat. You also have no idea that elephants would be all but extinct in the wild except for hunters. You have no idea what hunters do for the economies here and in Africa. You have no idea, period.

Knee jerk “conservatives” who have no idea, who supposedly espouse freedom and limited government, personal responsibility. Don’t know and don’t want to know. You and PETA make a good pair. Probably send your hard earned money to them instead of Free Republic. Whatever. That’s your choice.

Hunters, ethical hunters not poachers(there is a difference) do more good for wildlife than all the birders, hikers, campers and so called animal rights groups combined. You could just say “thanks”. But you have no idea

Ever swat a fly, kill a mosquito, step on an ant? All are God’s creatures right?

"Your rant sounds just a little put on, or maybe you are a true vegan?"

Vegan is an old Indian word that means "bad hunter".

You’re wrong. There’s no reason to kill to eat. There’s plenty of food that’s cheaper and easier to get. The only reason to hunt is for the man’s triumph over nature aspect. The meat is a bonus. Killing a lion is awesome (so I guess, I’ve only killed a dear, and that was with my minivan). She should be pleased with herself. All these PETA wimps wringing their hands about it reveals what Gaia worshipers we’ve become.

Of all the wild animals to kill for food, why a lion?
That is your point, she killed it to eat?
Really?

Is that all? I killed 100 billion bacteria this morning alone.
