Here's How Much the Old Are Taking From the Young

Grandma’s gettin’ greedy — or so some people might say.

New data published by the Congressional Budget Office show elderly households receive far more in government benefits than they pay in taxes, while all other households pay more in taxes than they get back. The data are from 2006, the most recent year the necessary numbers were available. The general findings aren't surprising, since people stop working and paying payroll taxes when they retire, and Social Security and Medicare are chiefly meant to benefit the elderly in the first place.

But the benefit gap between elderly and non-elderly households may seem lopsided to some. The popularity of programs such as Medicare and Social Security shows the U.S. has met the goal, originating in the 1930s, of building a robust safety net for seniors and others unable to fully support themselves. But demographics have changed dramatically since those big entitlements went into effect, with fewer young people now financing the benefits received by many more older people. Many feel the imbalance amounts to generational theft, as a disproportionate and growing share of national wealth goes to supporting the lifestyles of the elderly rather than cultivating future generations.

"people have come away from college with big bills for a long long time."

"Liberal" high edumacation is much more expensive in real terms than it used to be.

Excellent. I’m glad it’s working for you.

I understand the point you were trying to make. It was a good one too.

Thanks for the response.

I am not taking a damn from the young. The mere fact that most of them voted to put Obama in the white House twice proves that they are not capable of surviving by the sweat of their brow. Without the Government to steal the fruits of the producer’s labor and give it to them, they will starve to death.

Are folks forced to go to college?

They know what the costs are up front. They choose to go anyway.

There are alternatives. They may not be as glamorous, or desirable, but plenty of folks have made it huge not going to college at all.

There’s no excuse for not going to junior college. Most folks can afford that. Even an AA/AS degree is better than just high school.

You know what the best way would be to chop off the latest peak in University fees? Put off going for two years. If 75% of college bound kids dropped out for two years, you would see fees cut in half.

If this generation wants to make a statement, then make it. You don’t need to blame anyone else. Just go out there and demand better more cost effective access.

It's weird that I have yet to directly (Cha-ching) benefit from my parental generation.

Of course that excludes some actual investments in my education (reciprocated to my progeny already) and inculcation of values and personal motivation to go out and wrest my sustenance in a mutually beneficial interaction set with the world (hopefully also passed along to the progeny).

This would seem to be an idealization of Personal Liberty and the benefits of same. IMHO, fulfillment of the American Dream.

Yes, it would be fine if a bird pooed on me and not you. I don’t want you to get pooed on. If by luck, I do, then that’s my problem.

You are a moocher. Not only do you condone generational theft, you relish in the pain of those you’re mooching from. You would take pleasure if a bird pooped on me. Maybe you should look at the term schadenfreude and contemplate on whether or not that term describes you.

You can’t take back something that has already been spent. You are mischaracterizing what is happening to yourself in order to redeem your actions and motives. No one can guilt you into anything, for you must have principals and values before you may have guilt.

I go to tea party rallies and petition my reps for redress. I engage my charges and peers at work and my family and friends at home about our countries state. The way out is federalism and the reassertion of the states. Let there be 50 experiments instead of one. Maybe we need less eggs and more baskets. Be the vocal minority for a change.. Our culture is at a crossroads and you’re on the wrong side. What do you do? I doubt that you would challenge the status quo if it cost you. Your soul is for sale. Regardless of what society deems right and proper, we all have to answer for the thing we’ve done, the things we stood by and let happen, and the things we participated in. I hope your conscience is clear when that day comes.

My thoughts are coherent, so I will keep the brain I have.

I'd rather take my basic Physics courses online from Richard Feynman than some brie chewing, chardonnay swilling, Volvo drivin' leftist.

The University bubble is likely to be deflated in the next decades.

Note that Hillsdale is offering online courses as is MIT and a number of other institutions and some recently, spontaneously generated organizations.

Some basic training followed up by intensive OJT (including online job specific courses) would seem to be an improvement on the current situation and the wave of the future.

I am an “elderly”. I argue with your saying we have “all the advantages”. The problem is that the SS money has gone to so many others than we “elderly”! To clean up the program and ensure that there will be monies available in the future, the government MUST ELIMINATE THOSE young, NON Working leeches from the roles of recipients. Then, and only then, can your dream of saving, buying a house and investing in their future come true! Help those who cannot help themselves not those who will not help themselves. We must end “welfare” as we know it!

Yes, it would be fine if a bird pooed on me and not you. I don’t want you to get pooed on. If by luck, I do, then that’s my problem.

Aw, aren't you cute?  You don't mind if I paid into the Social Security system for 40 years, and can't draw a dime out, but you want me to think you're empathetic.  You do realize what a clown you're coming off looking like, right?

You are a moocher.
Says the guy who is trying to denigrate someone who paid into Social Security for over forty years, and was denied any interest on those fund whatsoever, because he stated he would be taking his benefits.  I will get paid more money than I paid into the fund, and that money will be paid out of the general fund in liu of the interest the federal government refused to pay me for over 40 years.

It interesting to realize that if someone owes you debt, you will consider yourself a moocher if they pay off.  Kind of sad, but none the less interesting.

Not only do you condone generational theft, you relish in the pain of those you’re mooching from.

To reveal out out of your mind you are, I suggest that you had two ways to go here.  You could have chosen to say you thought it was wrong that our funds were taken, and we were refused any interest on those funds, so we could retire with a better standard of living.  Instead you opt for the generational theft angle.  Okay sage, what was it when we were working for over 40 years?  Wan't that generational theft too?  Oh yeah, I guess it was.  Did we moan and groan and tell seniors they were moochers?  Ah no.  Each of us pulled up our big boy pants and went out to work each day without trashing the privous generation.

You would take pleasure if a bird pooped on me. Maybe you should look at the term schadenfreude and contemplate on whether or not that term describes you.

LOL

You can’t take back something that has already been spent. You are mischaracterizing what is happening to yourself in order to redeem your actions and motives. No one can guilt you into anything, for you must have principals and values before you may have guilt.

Yes, I realize what massive evidence it is that you have principles and values, by telling seniors they are moochers.  You really know how to hurt a guy.  Unfortunately, the small fact you missed, was..., you're the guy.

I go to tea party rallies and petition my reps for redress.
How's that wroking out for you?  Let me guess: Dear Sir;  Seniors..., and in conclusion may they all die and rot in hell!  Thanks for your consideration.  Forver yours, Dumb Shit...

I engage my charges and peers at work and my family and friends at home about our countries state.

Mom, Dad, Brothers, Sisters, and children everywhere: Seniors..., and in conclusion may they all die and rot in hell!  Please send $5 to The Senior Rat Poison Storehouse...  Tell me, does your plan involve wearing emblems, box cars, and long stays at a resort, followed by a short period in a small chamber?

The way out is federalism and the reassertion of the states. Let there be 50 experiments instead of one. Maybe we need less eggs and more baskets. Be the vocal minority for a change.. Our culture is at a crossroads and you’re on the wrong side. What do you do? I doubt that you would challenge the status quo if it cost you. Your soul is for sale. Regardless of what society deems right and proper, we all have to answer for the thing we’ve done, the things we stood by and let happen, and the things we participated in. I hope your conscience is clear when that day comes.

LOL, pure B. S. boiler plate.  You can try to wrap your dead fish logic in whatever you like, it's still going to stink like dead fish.  Who doesn't agree with this?  It doesn't make up for what you are avocating.

My thoughts are coherent, so I will keep the brain I have.

It's  kindof like that soccer player on the Rush show during commercial breaks.  They guy assures Rush there has been no brain damage.  Rush responds by saying those with a problem are the last to know.

I agree with these comments. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to denigrate the university ‘idea’. I think it has merit. I just don’t like what I see in the way of swamped system as it relates to Leftist ideology. I don’t like the idea that any government funds are going to run propagandist endeavors for the Left. I don’t like the idea that if you’re going to pull from a university for government service, you’re almost bound to have a subversive (to our Constitution) player on your hands.

I believe that even in a leftist world/America, the university system as it currently exists is unsustainable and many institutions will be overcome by Schumpeterian creative destruction.

What is more arrogant than to lay claim to the fruits of another’s labor? You existed before me therefore I must serve you. Is that not arrogant? You can blame the political class that facilitates the transfer (and they do deserve a lot of blame), but at some point, when the truth about it comes out, why aren’t people rejecting it? When is it the responsibility of the individual? Money to one party for a claim on another in exchange for power to a third. Those taking have responsibility to reject it. Those extorted have a responsibility to make it stop. And those facilitating the exchange are a criminal enterprise.
