Obama Allegedly Called Conservatives ‘Tea Baggers’ in Handwritten Letter

According to a report in The New York Post, President Barack Obama allegedly responded to a letter he received from a Texas school teacher who was concerned about the negative impact the Affordable Care Act may have on the president’s political position by referring to conservative Americans as “tea baggers.”

“This bill has caused such a divisive, derisive and toxic environment,” wrote Thomas Ritter, a fifth-grade teacher at Sally B. Elliott Elementary in Irving, Texas. “The reality is that any citizen that disagrees with your administration is targeted and ridiculed.”

Ritter added that he was afraid to write the president in the first place because he believed he could face “retribution.”

“I watched you make fun of tea baggers and your press secretary make fun of Ms. [Sarah] Palin which was especially beneath the dignity of the White House,” Ritter closed. “Do the right thing not the political thing. Suggest a bill that Americans can support.”

The president replied to Ritter on official White House stationary by saying that he appreciated his “concern about the toxic political environment right now.

“I do have to challenge you, though, on the notion that any citizen that disagrees with me has been ‘targeted and ridiculed’ or that I have ‘made fun’ of tea baggers,” the president replied, echoing Ritter’s use of the derogatory term applied to conservatives who identify with the tea party.

He did use the term in his letter to the usurper Obama. But I am not sure why unless he was trying to make the point that critics get called that name.

I can. It is undignified behavior from a president or anyone in a professional position of authority.

He could have left the wording out, unless he deeply supports that condescension and angry tone.

What's amazing to me is that Obama would sit down and handwrite a response to some guy who just sends him a critical letter.

Obama won't even talk to Repub House members.

Obama: “I have gone out of my way to listen to legitimate criticism”

Is he nuts?! He hasn't listened to anyone but those who agree with him! He has ridiculed and lied to and about everyone else!

Lock his butt up in a padded room because he is hallucinating!

It is below the office. (like you said, minor compared to all the other crap he has done, but it would have been major if not for all the other crap or if say, Bush, had done something similar)

It shows his deep hatred for conservatives.... or, whoever might have written it. Did he write it or just sign it?

That certainly sounds like Obama.

Calling people “tea bagger” is a form of sexual harassment.

he would be the ‘tea-baggie; who likes what dangles in his face. ‘do the name Reggie Love and Larry Sinclair strike a familiar note....’

It does not seem as if it would be a great literary challenge for a person not to respond in writing using the same terms as used to address the person to begin with. Would a Lincoln, I cannot envision that a Truman, Jefferson, Washington, or Kennedy would use such a gutter term, being conscious of the decorum of high office. At worst, BHO could have handed the task of coming up with a draft response that did not use the term to a speechwriter, and then incorporated the result into his final response. Now BHO has apparently entered the term into the presidential vocabulary forever. I come away with the impression that BHO is personally extremely upset with not being appreciated for the ACA and that he is self destructive to the point that he does not mind collateral damage to the presidency and the country. We’ve got three more years of him so I just hope we all survive this guy.

Hi Laz, I hope you are well.

I question any “reporter” that doesn’t know that the paper that is written on is “stationery,” not stationary. I’m glad Zero has time to hand write letters, and not go to Gettysburg, while he bones up on perjorative phrases. (With all intended sarcasm)

The follow-up question to OhBlahBlah would then be, “What do you consider “legitimate criticism”?”

It has been an on-going “act of insult” in basketball (all levels, including municipal leagues) since circa 1982.

The “crossed-armed hatchet”, popularized by Brett Farve on the playoff circa 1990 is the same insult. (he faces the opposing bench and makes a “hatchet” move with his hands to his thighs while crossing his arms...can’t find the image right now).

IOW, it ain’t new, just being more recognized for its significance.
