I had a lot of jobs in a somewhat knockabout youthwaitress, clerk, temporary secretary, counter girl in a bakery and in a flower shop.
One thing all these jobs had in common was something so common, so expected, that it was unremarked upon. You got holidays off.
About a million Wal-Mart workers will have to be in by 5 p.m. for a 6 p.m. opening, so I guess they'll have to eat quickly with family, then bolt. Kmart will open on Thanksgiving too, along with Target, Sears, Best Buy and Macy's, among others.
It's not right. The idea that Thanksgiving doesn't demand special honor marks another erosion of tradition, of ceremony, of a national sense. And this country doesn't really need more erosion in those areas, does it?
People deserve a day off if what they do is nonessential. Selling a toy, a jacket, even a rose is nonessential.
Black Fridaythat creepy sales bacchanal in which the lost, the lonely, the stupid and the compulsive line up before midnight Friday to crash through the doors, trampling children and frightening clerks along the wayis bad enough, enough of a blight on the holiday.
But Thanksgiving itself? It is the day the Pilgrims invented to thank God to live in such a place as this, the day Abe Lincoln formally put aside as a national time of gratitude for the sheer fact of our continuance. It's more important than anyone's bottom line. That's a hopelessly corny thing to say, isn't it? Too bad. It's true.
Oh, I hope people don't go. I hope it's a big flop.
Stay home, America.
And happy Thanksgiving to our beloved country, the great and fabled nation that is still, this day, the hope of the world.

Well I was not posting to any FREEPER directly, just generalization. It just makes me sick how hypocritical these guys are at times. I never heard them complaining about the movie theater employees, restaurant employees, etc.
Which would be politically correct for Illegal Aliens?
They have a right to try and make money, they have no "right" to make money.
Where did I say say the government should step in. Don’t put words in my mouth. And indirectly calling me a hypocrite with no basis is frigging lame. Hope you don’t get so sick you wet your bed or anything.
Straw man. Nobody has insisted that the government make it illegal. But conservatives do remember a day of Thanks, prayer, and a day with families.
Everybody knows a few people have always worked, cops, doctors, and also for a few festive things like parades and football games.
But back then, conservatives would have been disgusted to think it was just another day, where everyone shopped, and huge numbers of people had to work. FR is just as conservative as ever. Remembering Thanksgiving is conservative.
Good point :)
Maybe I can stop by after dinner and take some pictures.
Just curious who is shopping.
Good God what a question. I would rather they go South and not turn back.
Shopping on Thanksgiving Day is not a problem, it is a symptom. As long as we continue to support the academic and entertainment communities that are deliberately undermining our families, morals and traditions, we will continue to see a deterioration of all three.
I'm not sure what planet she grew up on because most retail jobs involve working on Holidays as do many other jobs and it's pretty much been that way for many years. Ever go to the movies on Thanksgiving? guess what people have to work at the theater. Ever rent a Movie at Blockbuster or other rental chains, yes they are open. How about Hospitals? Yup they are open and filled with doctors and nurses and other highly educated people that have to work on Holidays. And what about Fireman, Policemen, our military.
Everybody knows a few people have always worked, cops, doctors, and also for a few festive things like parades and football games.
You know that you are not even close. Movie Theaters, restaurants, country clubs, bus/air/taxi/train, etc. A large amount of people work Thanksgiving. I give you the military under your first sentence.
BS. Most of the military has a relaxed day if its at all possible. But its still a strawman. Most of America did not traditionally work on Thanksgiving when I grew up.
Listing the exceptions does not make the end normal thanksgiving a decent thing. And if we are going to whore out such an important tradition, why not go whole hog? How about banks, schools, etc. Everything?
Is there ANY activity you think SHOULD take off for the day?If so, why are they any different?
One of the reasons we’re moving to a small town is to get away from the 24/7 retail world that infects most cities and suburbs. Give it a rest once in a while, folks.....
I don’t think anybody here is denying that businesses should be free to make their own decisions. Does that mean we have to agree with every one of those decisions?
I am pro-business and I feel they have the experience to run their business as needed. The time between Thanksgiving and Christmas is very tight this year. The businesses need every moment of time to sell before Christmas. This is the the time that businesses make most of their money for the year.
When I was hourly, I loved working holidays. Double time-and-a-half, baby!
Yep. She’s right on this one, and for the right reasons.
BTTT
I run a public utility. I have to be there tomorrow. Double time and a half. I’ll manage.
is that work or a show of character
