My guys clamored and signed up months in advance for holiday pay (triple time). Not all, but most.

At $75-$90 an hour, it was how they paid for those big gifts.

I used to volunteer to work Christmas Day, actually the Midnight to 8 AM Shift, to get paid Overtime.

Back then, in the 70’s, I made $12.00 an Hour working that shift and was glad to get it. I was rich, LOL...

I am sorry if your significant others are grouches. I guess all families have some kind of dysfunction. But how can you call shopping “fun?” Ok maybe I’m weird I wouldn’t describe it as fun even though I’m a female. Other things like playing poker, canasta, family feud, guitar, singing with the fam that’s FUN to me. And you say you like being in the store with other strangers because they are having “fun” too? Okay I can see shopping for a new car, flooring, paint, flowers for the garden, certain items can be fun to shop for but I dont’ enjoy shopping for groceries, clothes, essentials and household goods. I don’t think Macy’s sells anything I’d call “fun” shopping for. When I was younger I loved to go to the cosmetic counters though.

Who’s the sucker, the ones making money or the ones standing in line spending money? The official government imposed holiday is today, don’t like it then celebrate on another day.

If a family chooses to go out together and shop what’s it to anyone ?

This might be one of their only days off when they can be together and it’s up to them how they spend it.

Why not say a prayer to God in gratitude for capitalism. It might soon be gone.

When I first saw this ‘idea’ about not shopping on Thanksgiving it was posted by my liberal ‘friends’ on Facebook, then soon everyone was reposting the mantra. Certainly a liberal concept and I have to wonder what is really behind it. I don’t buy the ‘home with family’ line.

I used to ask to work the holiday for extra pay, it was great. Not everyone has somewhere to go or needs/wants to spend the entire day with the in laws. If as a business I want to stay open to provide a service then I have that right and should not be tagged as anti Cristian or anti family.

Shame on those who call themselves conservative for not thinking this through. Down here we have businesses that do not open on Sunday’s but it is because of the owner’s choice, not public pressure.

I’m convinced this idea of boycotting establishment that are open today is a progressive, leftist idea sold to look like something else.

Putting family, tradition and thanks to God ahead of mindless consumerism is a leftist idea that’s anti-conservative? You must’ve grown up around some pretty weird conservatives.

I won’t be indulging in this stupid buying orgy on Thanksgiving or the day after, for two good reasons. One, Thanksgiving traditions should be respected. And two, Black Friday is for suckers. Stand in line for hours (or if you’re really an idiot, camp out in the cold for two weeks) in hopes of running into a store and grabbing one of the come-on deep-discount items (they’ll have three of each in stock) that have probably already been snapped up by relatives of the store manager, or that are so cheap because they’re no-name knock-offs. Then after giving up your time, your holiday and your health, you can go online a week later and find the same merchandise on sale at about the same price. And you can order it from bed, which is convenient, because you’ll be recovering from pneumonia.

BTW, a lot of the big deals are available online concurrently with the Black Friday sales. So you’re leaving your family on Thanksgiving and going out into the freezing cold to fight the crowds for nothing.

Great story! Worthy of a double post!
Thanksgiving should be a lifestyle not just a feast day.
Look backwards with forgiveness, forward without fear and around you with thankfulness. Happy Thanksgiving!

I agree that people should stay home for the Thanksgiving day holiday.Though if they wish to go out and shop thats their decision.

What I don’t want to see is a bunch of Politicians going out and passing new laws preventing Free Enterprise.

"Peggy, you're nothing to me now. You're not a sister, you're not a friend. I don't want to know you or what you do. I don't want to see you on television, or read what you write. I don't want you near any conservative conferences. When you see my friends, I want to know a day in advance, so I won't be there. You understand?"

With apologies to Michael Corleone.

So according to you, everything should be open normally every Thanksgiving.

If they so choose, yes! If there are customers wanting to shop, why shouldn't the business take advantage of it? There are lots of Americans out there that live alone or can't afford to travel long distances to visit family. Not to mention giving the employees the opportunity to get some overtime pay.

I worked in a job shop (machine shop) years ago. I worked 12 hour days, 7 days a week for months on end. Made good money at it...

So having the freedom to open your business on a holiday is now a bad thing??

“I hope all you hypocrites skip all the football game...”

I’m against Thanksgiving shopping, not because of the workers or because it dishonors the holiday, but because everyone should watch Steelers-Ravens.

Ummm I would venture to guess that it IS conservatives (you know those people who value family and tradition)who would be on the side of keeping unnecessary places of business closed so everyone can observe a national Holiday

Wow! Just wow! You're saying that a business owner doesn't have the right to open their business on the holidays they so choose??

is that work or a show of character

It was my job. By law someone had to be there to keep the Boilers running. I didn't mind it though. I worked evenings and family scheduled holidays around that.

Shame on those who call themselves conservative for not thinking this through.

I agree! So now we're supposed to emulate Socialist Europe where they roll up the sidewalks and close all the businesses on weekends and holidays....

Let somethings in America not be for sale over family values. There should be somethings that should be sacred.

Many people work on Thanksgiving.

Police, Firefighters, Doctors and Nurses at Hospitals, Restaurants who serve turkey to those too lazy to cook their own, gas stations, tow trucks. Toll collectors at toll roads, How many Volunteers will be called in the Middle of their family meal to answer an alarm?

How many of those who work today will be thankful they have a job to work at.
