Sriracha hot sauce factory in Irwindale raises banner: ‘No Tear Gas Made Here’

The maker of popular hot chili sauce Sriracha made a bold statement Friday with a banner reading, “No tear gas made here,” placed outside its North Azusa Canyon Road factory.

Huy Fong Foods CEO David Tran had released a statement with the same sentiment Wednesday morning following a ruling from a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge that said Tran must partially shut down his factory due to odor complaints from residents near the factory.

The city of Irwindale had sued Huy Fong Foods claiming the smells coming from the factory created a “public nuisance” after residents began complaining the odor caused their eyes to burn, gave them coughing fits, created gagging sensations, and gave them heartburn and even nosebleeds.

One resident compared a whiff of odors emanating from the factory to pepper spray, according to court documents.

Huy Fong officials were not available for comment Friday.

Judge Robert H. O’Brien ordered on Tuesday that Huy Fong must shut down the part of its operation that causes the odor and immediately make changes to mitigate the smell.

Huy Fong has said the ruling could mean there will be 200,000 less bottles of Sriracha sauce produced each day.

The city has until Wednesday to submit its proposed preliminary injunction to the court.

The color of the banner raised outside Huy Fong matched the sauce’s iconic green-colored lid.

I started to drool a little, Pavlov style, just at the mention of Sriracha...

The political and business interests in california won’t be happy until the US hands the state over to mexico, so that they can join their socialist brethren. In the mean time, no siracha for you, because it’s asian and not hispanic.

That whole eastern section of the L.A. basin is a smog hellhole. The smell of Sriracha would actually give it some character.

People only started building and buying houses out in that armpit because it was the last real estate market anyone could afford in L.A. It had been entirely industrial for decades.

Who was there first, the sauce factory or the residents? Are they like the morons who move in near the airport and then bitch about aircraft noise?

Interesting. I wonder what all is in what their processes are releasing.

It sure sounds potent and might be of value.

Could it be captured and its chemistry refined and processed?

So much is wasted getting to the nugget of what we're after, but we're getting a little bit better about how we see things, like the by-products and left-overs.

For example, we're even re-learning to capture, process and use the methane naturally released from our decaying dumps or livestock animal waste. A nice, practical twist to making lemonade from life's lemons!

This company could have a similar opportunity hidden in its "problem".

Fire up about a dozen ozone generators ... oh wait .. that’s smog isn’t it..I guess L.A. will just have to do with one less employer...

OK , move to some desert town within easy trucking distance , preferably on the Nevada side..

Love it! I wonder if I shot some up my schnoz, would it clear my sinuses? Just had some at lunchtime at the Chinese buffet. Put it on shrimp and on mussels. Yum!

Yep, getting out looks like a good idea.

Weird how some parts of our world seem to be hell bent on chasing away the good, while attracting and welcoming the bad.

As an observer, I wonder if we're not seeing a kind of built in cleansing mechanism in the cosmic program designed to make the final clean up and disposal of harmful infections easier and less costly and wasteful.

In light of that good point let me recommend a chilled and peeled shrimp for an applicator.
