Lamar Alexander: RINO on the run?
The Washington Times ^ | November 30. 2013 | Judson Phillips

The conventional wisdom is that Lamar Alexander is in a position that almost any political would kill for.

The Republican Senator from Tennessee represents a state that has gone from being a purple state even a decade ago to a solidly red state. Ten years ago, a Democrat sat in the governor’s mansion. The Democrats controlled both the State House and State Senate, albeit with a Speaker of the Senate who governed with a coalition of Republicans and Democrats.

Lamar Alexander is now running ads in Tennessee in advance of his primary election. On its face, that does not seem unusual except his primary is not until August. In the last fundraising quarter, Lamar Alexander raised $840,000 but spent $1.1 million. He is now engaged in a huge advertising buy nine months in advance of the election.

Why would he do that?

I have been a supporter of Lamar and have one of his original campaign posters on my wall from so far back I can’t remember. I now write him letters to change or resign. He is not the man for the time. He is old.

Having said that, I am not sure he can be defeated. Tennessee is not really a conservative state. State wide elections do not fair well for doctrinaire conservative candidates. What we think of as RINO’s fair better. That is voters prefer some one right of center but not extreme right

Here in East Tennessee, strongly conservative, the strong conservative was primaried in a large field and went on to be elected. Two years later, he was ousted by a less conservative but popular and well financed candidate. Dr Roe was seen to have broader and more acceptable views. He is not a RINO however.

The Senate candidate with the most appeal to Tennessee business will win the day

None of this analysis means we shouldn’t continue to work for a real conservative hoewver.

a few months he was running ads touting his conservatism by how he voted against the “no fishing below dams” federal regulation that was being proposed. Meant to call his office and thank them for the laughs, and suggest his next campaign slogan could be “hey, at least I’m not Corker”.

Lamar is a democrat who runs as a Republican in order to get elected in Tennessee. He’s a big spending liberal. It’s sad really.

Lamar! was a Howard Baker Republican from the 1960s and lost his first race (for governor)in 1974. People in TN adore him.

They should run ads with interviews with Tea Party Senators laughing when asked if Lamar is a conservative.

I think they should have attacked Lamar for the bitter clinger implication.

First Obama says gun owners are bitter clingers. Bill Clinton after Newtown said all these people know is fishing and hunting.

Then Lamar Alexander belittles his constituents by implying all they know is fishing.

Tennessee is not really a conservative state.

To this fossil, a "Red" state was the former USSR.

I hate the use of "Red" to describe a state that leans Republican.
