Activists, Families Call For New Laws To Combat Gun Violence

CHICAGO (CBS) — Activists and victims’ families observed the one-year anniversary of the school shootings in Newtown, Conn., Saturday by meeting in the Back of the Yards park in which 13 people were shot in an assault rifle attack.

They said merely to remember is not enough, and said they were dedicating themselves to the passage of new laws to curb gun violence.

Shondra Robinson and others said they must work to change the law so background checks on gun buyers is universal, and those who should not have guns are barred from owning them.

“We will be back,” she warned, her voice growing to a shout. “We won’t stop. We will remember. We will not be silenced, and we will honor with action.”

It’s already illegal for felons to use guns to murder people...

How much more illegal do they want to make it?

/rhetorical

We need even more laws to make everyone safer.

Maybe if we made it extra illegal to kill someone the murder rate would drop.

Gun control laws or the lack thereof, have no effect on crime. The only thing that drives crime statistics is the available number of criminals in a given area. Places like Chicago, Detroit and others have a higher number of available criminals than do places like Boise Id, etc.

There is no such thing as gun violence. Been in the militray/ a LEO and Corerctions etc for years. Never saw a gun load itself get up and go commit any violence. I have seen many peopkle to so though. Perhaps these activists can explain what law exactly will impact that? Why would some new law work where hundrds of other laws have not?

Banning guns didn’t work, maybe trying something that has worked, owning them.. Rhetorical.. :)

If we want a safer, kinder society, maybe some effort should be taken to promote greater sensitivity towards our fellow man. It is the lack of sensitivity that seems to be prevalent in the Left which is sinking deeper into a lack of respect for human life. Gun ownership is just a reaction to that lack of sensitivity—that lack of respect. The knockout game is a symptom of the lack of respect for human life. There are many more symptoms and many of them cause people to arm themselves because of what they fear from those who do not value them as human beings.

These are the same people who whine about the prison population.

I doubt Chicago’s prosecutors and judges are giving long sentences to those committing crimes with guns,

I have an idea for a new law to combat gun violence: Mandatory concealed carry laws. If more armed law-abiding citizens are around, gun violence by criminals and maniacs will be reduced.

Otherwise these people can go kiss my grits. I’m sick and tired of these fools attacking me every time some maniac acts out.

MOST Americans have FINALLY gotten the point: restrictive gun laws not only do NOT reduce gun crime, they INCREASE it.

"...must work to change the law so background checks on gun buyers is universal..."

The shooter at the school in Colorado yesterday passed the background check for that gun he bought less than two weeks earlier.

Lotta good that did, huh?

The dirty little secret of "background checks" is that one of the most important pieces of information about a buyer's history -- his psychiatric history and long-term prescription drug use -- are considered confidential under Federal law and therefore wouldn't even show up.

A society that refuses to institutionalize the loony-tunes that walk among its law-abiding citizens can expect to have an occasional murder spree with a lot of innocent victims.

The idiocy of some people is alarming, no where do you hear the failure of the states and the federal gov on the mental health issues facing the saftey of the public. They are all so hell bent on putting these supposed self medicated patients who are free in normal settings in society for thier own good not ours. Shortly after sandy hook thier was another incident of a mental patient knifing 7 people so no matter what instrument is used the common theme is thier is a mental patient behind that weapon no matter what it might be. Agenda conductors conducting an orchestra of idiots

No, you’re dead wrong; we have to make it at least extra, extra, EXTRA illegal.

Then maybe people will pay attention.

And if that doesn’t work, we can always make it extra, extra, extra, EXTRA illegal.

Ms Shonda, criminals will get ILLEGAL guns. Background checks won’t help because they steal guns, not buy them LEGALLY!

You forgot to make it Double Secret EXTRA illegal for criminals to have guns.

Now, that will really “Scare them straight”.

Shondra knows who the criminals are in her neighbor. I’m sure I’ll see her run right down to the police station to give them that information.

Yet right! It’s the Chicago way, NOT TO SAY.

...in which 13 people were shot in an assault rifle attack.

I wonder how the assault rifle staged the attack. Did it just grow legs and become able to load and fire itself or did it develop mental powers which allowed it to take over the mind of an innocent drone?

True, but I think including psychiatric history in the background check would open up worse can of worms. What type of mental illness would flag someone as being unfit? And who'd get to decide?

Keep in mind that there are countries where certain people were branded "mentally ill" merely for their opposition to those in power and were summarily shipped off to a gulag somewhere.
