WIDOW FACES EVICTION IN FLA. CITY FOR ‘LIVING OFF THE GRID’
The Blaze ^ | Dec. 14, 2013 | Oliver Darcy

A Fla. city is set to evict a widow for her unique lifestyle of “living off the grid.”

Robin Speronis told WFTX-TV that she was given an eviction notice after the station aired a story about how she chooses to live in a home without modern amenities, such as running water and electricity.

“A code enforcement officer came, knocked on the door then posts a placard that says uninhabitable property, do not enter,” Robin said.

“Putting a woman who lives by herself, who is a widow, out on the street without any due process of law is unfathomable,” she added.

According to WFTX-TV, the notice cited international property maintenance code which said the property is not safe to live in.

Speronis, however, disputes such claims and wonders how a code enforcement officer would know without even entering the house. Now, she is speaking out demanding justice.

“I’m going to bring this to the attention of anyone who will listen until justice is served,” she said.

“Where is the justice? Why did they choose me,” she asked, “I was exercising my First Amendment rights of free speech in discussing living off the grid.”

A local attorney has decided to represent Speronis for free, according to WFTX-TV.

It does appear, however, that Speronis has a criminal history. According to the Cape Coral Daily Breeze, she was found guilty of larceny and in 2012 had her real estate license revoked.

“Another was bit by a rattlesnake in his kitchen. “

Now that’s just showing off.

more here than meets the eye

Quite possibly.

Bankrupt in 2012.

Real estate license lifted in 2011 for stealing escrowed funds after failed transactions. Convicted of larceny and sentenced to 10 years probation. Link. She faced a similar accusation in 2009, but the case was dropped.

Ditto. I think about it more and more every day. Something slightly more than Crocodile Dundee’s walk about shack but not much.

What is your cell/battery set-up? Been getting interested in them.

My guess is someone turned her in. Probably someone she is getting her water from.

She has to flush the toilet or get rid of her waste somewhere. maybe she is dumping it outside. She washes her dishes I am sure. She may be using a neighbors tap.

I have seen this done in DC where people steal their electricity and once I even saw a garden hose hooked up to a gas line to take gas from one house to another.

I would bet they got a complaint from someone.

Did she have an outhouse? Was there an overwhelming odor? I think that more information is needed.

She collected water in rain barrels, which she used to flush the toilet with. Heated up water for shower in a solar shower bag.

If she were only a young hippy liberal twittering about decreasing her carbon footprint, they would make her a saint. I'd sue for profiling, nobody ever did this to the occupy movement.

Just think. No much more than 100 years ago all of ancestors would have been evicted from there homes by these Commie Nazi code enforcers. Just how did mankind survive for all those thousands of years living off the grid.

> Solar panels and batteries. No GRID elektrikity. I'm gonna have 'lektrikity. Notice the laptop just inside the window?

I envy your 10Mbit link. I'm stuck at 3Mbit (down) and a 1/10th of that up.

Been off grid, PVs, batteries, and a Trace inverter, since about 1990. Being in upstate NY I have a gas genny for backup/emergency and it's true that lately I've burned some dead dinosaurs during the short cloudy days. My wind genny is offline, alas, with a busted governor. It's a project... Water is from from a nearby spring, clean and tasty, plenty of it year around.

The power company can go down and I don't know it until a friend calls my cell to see how I'm doing (A: "Fine! And you?")

There's drawbacks, but overall it's a big win.

And I believe there's more of us than anybody knows or admits.
